HOBBYIST photographers looking to sharpen their composition skills will get hands-on guidance this Sunday during a two-hour workshop hosted by the Bendigo Photography Group and industry veteran Matt Furneaux.<\/p>\n

Part of the photography group’s ongoing education series, the session will focus on portraiture using natural light and will explore how thoughtful positioning and light selection can dramatically improve an image.<\/p>\n

Furneaux, a former Fairfax Media photographer and picture editor, said the workshop will cover positioning, understanding lenses and choosing the right lens for the situation, as well as how to place subjects in the best available light and turn them toward the frame.<\/p>\n

“Background is very important,” he said. “Choosing the right background with the right trees or darkness or fence line or signage.<\/p>\n

“You also don’t particularly want a rubbish bin in the background; people often forget that.<\/p>\n

“That’s a conscious choice when positioning at the beginning.”<\/p>\n

He said the workshops typically begin with a 30-minute technical component before moving into practical shooting, with the cohort visiting different locations.<\/p>\n

“We finish up by having a look at and talking about everybody’s pictures to see what we’ve learned,” Furneaux said.<\/p>\n

“Being only a couple of hours you can only fit in so much, but it seems to work pretty well.”<\/p>\n

The Portraiture With Natural Light class will run from 10am to noon this Sunday, with tickets available via the Bendigo Photography Group website<\/a>.<\/p>\n
