{"id":111325,"date":"2026-02-10T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-09T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=111325"},"modified":"2026-02-05T01:30:41","modified_gmt":"2026-02-04T14:30:41","slug":"bush-to-bay-tournament-an-all-round-hit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/sport\/bush-to-bay-tournament-an-all-round-hit\/","title":{"rendered":"Bush to Bay tournament an all-round hit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PICKLEBALL&#8217;S Victoria&#8217;s Rally Series Bush to Bay got off to a smashing start in Ballarat over the Australia Day long weekend, proudly hosted by the Central Highlands Pickleball Club at the Ballarat Regional Tennis Centre.<\/p>\n<p>Attracting more than 450 competitors, supported by 40 dedicated volunteers and 10 referees, the event was widely praised by players and spectators alike.<\/p>\n<p>Tournament director and Central Highlands Pickleball Club head coach Hannah Handreck said feedback from competitors was overwhelmingly positive, with many highlighting the thoughtful amenities provided throughout the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>An ice tent offered welcome relief from the heat, while ample indoor and outdoor seating ensured comfort for players and supporters.<\/p>\n<p>Food options were described as sensational, with all proceeds donated to a local charity.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2026\/02\/moo_43566.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"531\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thank you: The Victorian Rally Series committee present tournament director Amanda Moo with an appreciation gift. Photos: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Ballarat Regional Tennis Centre, under the management of Vincent Stouff and Irina Ramialison, proved to be outstanding hosts.<\/p>\n<p>Players frequently commented on the warm and welcoming atmosphere, expressing their appreciation for how openly they were embraced by both of them at the venue.<\/p>\n<p>Handreck paid special tribute to the children who volunteered their time across the tournament.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These young volunteers dedicated countless hours assisting with player sign-ins, filling drink bottles, restocking ice, selling raffle tickets and supporting numerous behind-the-scenes tasks,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Their efforts went well above and beyond expectations and were instrumental to the event&#8217;s success.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In her closing address, Handreck extended her thanks to the referees and tournament director Amanda Moo.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was noted that many players felt referees deserve great support and encouragement for the vital role they play, and this acknowledgement was warmly received, reinforcing Central Highlands Pickleball Club&#8217;s strong culture of respect and appreciation,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2026\/02\/1000040936_51644.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"648\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Central Highlands Pickleball Club members throw their support behind one of their teammates during the long weekend tournament. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The tournament also delivered some memorable on-court performances.<\/p>\n<p>Thirteen-year-old Maddy Sims, the Central Highlands club&#8217;s youngest member, played exceptionally alongside her father Ben, earning a gold medal.<\/p>\n<p>Father and son Matthew and Brendan Broughton, members of the club for just seven months, claimed gold in the split-age men&#8217;s division.<\/p>\n<p>Several other club partnerships also celebrated podium finishes.<\/p>\n<p>Darryl Lacey \u2013 affectionately known as &#8216;The Janitor&#8217; \u2013 secured an impressive three gold medals, while the club&#8217;s head coach \u2013 fondly referred to as the &#8216;Queen of Pickleball&#8217; \u2013 finished the weekend with two gold medals and one bronze.<\/p>\n<p>With its strong turnout, exceptional organisation and unmistakable community spirit, Bush to Bay has firmly established itself as an event destined to endure for years to come.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PICKLEBALL&#8217;S Victoria&#8217;s Rally Series Bush to Bay got off to a smashing start in Ballarat over the Australia Day long weekend, proudly hosted by the Central Highlands Pickleball Club at the Ballarat Regional Tennis Centre.
