LOCAL celebrations for the Lunar New Year begin this weekend in splendid fashion, with hundreds of central Victorians expected to usher in the lunar calendar’s first new moon.<\/p>\n

Leading the way, the Bendigo Chinese Association will hold its annual free festivities tomorrow afternoon and evening (Saturday 14 February) at Dai Gum San from 3pm to 8pm.<\/p>\n

The popular event will showcase performances from the HH Kung Fu Club, the Indian Association of Bendigo, the Karen Culture and Social Support Foundation, the Indonesian Association of Bendigo and, of course, perennial favourites the BCA Lion Team.<\/p>\n

The world-class Lion Team will also re-emerge at the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion on Sunday 1 March, which is hosting Lunar New Year activities and performances from Saturday 21 February.<\/p>\n

Ellie Smith, who takes care of marketing and events at the largest Buddhist stupa in the Western world, said the merriment will continue for a full week “so people can have some moments of joy and reflection and celebrate some new beginnings”.<\/p>\n

She said the Bodhi Tree wishes activity \u2013 which is taking place all day every day during the festivities \u2013 is a highlight that’s open to everyone, regardless of their religious beliefs.<\/p>\n

“Anyone can do it, we’re a multi-faith place here,” she said.<\/p>\n

“You write your wishes for the new year down on a leaf and hang them on one of the trees that we have inside.<\/p>\n

“It can be anything, it doesn’t have to be spiritual.”<\/p>\n

Ms Smith encouraged people to make use of what is also known as the Chinese New Year to come together, enjoy themselves, reflect and hope.<\/p>\n

“We invite the whole community to congregate through culture, colour and connection,” she said.<\/p>\n

“Everyone’s absolutely welcome, including pets!”<\/p>\n
