{"id":111491,"date":"2026-02-16T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-15T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=111491"},"modified":"2026-02-11T18:37:34","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T07:37:34","slug":"golden-run-comes-to-an-end-for-fitzsimmons-group-1-winner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/sport\/golden-run-comes-to-an-end-for-fitzsimmons-group-1-winner\/","title":{"rendered":"Golden run comes to an end for Fitzsimmons Group 1 winner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A GAME-changer for Bendigo-based Fitzsimmons Racing, Group 1 winner Golden Monkey has been retired from racing.<\/p>\n<p>The seven-year-old gelding, who provided trainer Tim Fitzsimmons with the biggest win of his career in the 2023 Group 1 Singapore Derby (1800m), suffered a grade 3 internal bleed following his run at Caulfield on 31 January and was subsequently retired following talks with his ownership group.<\/p>\n<p>Fitzsimmons, who relocated to Bendigo from Singapore at the start of 2025, said the decision was made with the horse&#8217;s long-term welfare as the clear priority.<\/p>\n<p>While he did not reach the heights of his remarkable Singapore career in Australia, Golden Monkey will always be fondly remembered for delivering some of the stable&#8217;s biggest moments.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Golden Monkey brought a lot of joy to a lot of people,&#8221; Fitzsimmons said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s been an incredible horse for our stable and his owners, and while it&#8217;s never easy to make these calls, his wellbeing always comes first.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Golden Monkey was one of about a dozen horses Fitzsimmons brought with him to Bendigo from Singapore, and the best credentialed.<\/p>\n<p>The son of dual Group winning sprinter Star Turn competed at the very top level during his time in Singapore, establishing himself as one of the standout horses of his generation.<\/p>\n<p>His crowning achievement came as a three-year-old when he captured the Group 1 Singapore Derby, a performance that firmly stamped him as an elite racehorse.<\/p>\n<p>His derby success was part of a dominant three-year-old season, which also included victories in the Group 2 Singapore Classic and the Group 3 Three-Year-Old Sprint.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2026\/02\/Monkey_12077.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Golden Monkey charges to his biggest career win in the 2023 Group 1 Singapore Derby.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He was crowned Singapore&#8217;s champion three-year-old.<\/p>\n<p>Golden Monkey carried that brilliant form into his four-year-old season, adding the Group 2 Stewards&#8217; Cup and Group 3 Fortune Bowl to his resume and earning the title of Singapore champion four-year-old.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He competed at the highest level year after year and always gave everything,&#8221; Fitzsimmons said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To win a Singapore Derby and then go on and be champion three-year-old and champion four-year-old says everything about the horse he was.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fitzsimmons said Golden Monkey had played a massive role in shaping the stable&#8217;s journey.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;JIG Racing brought Golden Monkey into our stable and we&#8217;ll be forever grateful to Josh McLoughlin for that opportunity,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The horse really changed our lives.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He was the right horse at the right time and gave us the platform to build our stable around him.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He played a huge role in our success in Singapore and was a major factor in winning the Singapore trainers&#8217; premiership in 2022.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Golden Monkey raced eight times in Australia for Fitzsimmons, kicking off in the $500,000 Country Discovery (1000m) at Echuca in April, but was unable to break through for a win.<\/p>\n<p>Golden Monkey will transition into a well-earned post-racing life, something Fitzsimmons says is a fitting reward for such a genuine competitor.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;ll deservedly have a really good life after racing,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;ll always hold a special place in my heart, and in the hearts of his owners.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re incredibly grateful for everything he&#8217;s given us.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A GAME-changer for Bendigo-based Fitzsimmons Racing, Group 1 winner Golden Monkey has been retired from racing.
