{"id":112118,"date":"2026-03-06T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-03-05T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=112118"},"modified":"2026-03-05T17:49:23","modified_gmt":"2026-03-05T06:49:23","slug":"op-shop-needs-help-on-both-sides-of-counter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/living\/op-shop-needs-help-on-both-sides-of-counter\/","title":{"rendered":"Op shop needs help on both sides of counter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>IF you&#8217;re partial to bargain secondhand goods, an op shop nestled between the Cal Gully Takeaway and California Gully Quality Meats on Eaglehawk Road has them in spades.<\/p>\n<p>The MADCOW (Make a Difference, Change Our World) Op Shop \u2013 formerly R&amp;J Moss Auto Electrics \u2013 opens from a single shopfront into an expansive, brightly-lit warehouse space, and to those in the know has become one of the best places to thrift in town since its conversion in August 2023.<\/p>\n<p>It stocks everything from women&#8217;s clothing to jewellery, books and bric a brac, electronics, furniture, hardware and homewares, artworks and haberdashery, bedding and mattresses.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2026\/03\/MC2_27815.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"397\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The MADCOW Op Shop can be found at 315 Eaglehawk Road in Cal Gully at the former site of R&amp;J Moss Auto Electrics.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>All profits from the store go towards MADCOW&#8217;s suite of homeless services, which operate from the charity&#8217;s central Bendigo (and previous op shop) site at 214 Hargreaves Street.<\/p>\n<p>Inaugural CEO Matt Parkinson said &#8220;it&#8217;s a really important thing&#8221; that all monies raised never leave the postcode.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have great people, we have great stock, and it all stays local and goes to our homeless services, every cent of it,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the charity&#8217;s assistance is needed now more than ever, as Bendigo&#8217;s rough sleeper numbers continue to grow.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s gotten worse, it&#8217;s difficult to navigate,&#8221; he said. &#8220;There&#8217;s been an increase in what we see as drug use, there&#8217;s been an increase in mental health concerns for people on the street. It&#8217;s a hard life out there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2026\/03\/MC1_27920.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">MADCOW CEO Matt Parkinson said the charity\u2019s assistance is needed now more than ever, as Bendigo&#8217;s rough sleeper numbers continue to grow.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Parkinson said his organisation receives no government funding and relies heavily on the help of volunteers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s busy and it would be great to have another paid staff position in there, but at the same time there&#8217;s always room for more volunteers,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s ongoing and there&#8217;s quite a range of opportunities for people to serve with MADCOW.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a big process finding people with the skills to identify what donations are worth, for example we get lots of volunteers that perhaps can&#8217;t do that, but they can go and put stuff on the racks.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If they&#8217;ve got an interest in bric-a-brac, clothes or furniture, they&#8217;ll happily sort that too.
