Photos: AJ TAYLOR\/TYLER O&#8217;KEEFE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Whether it be in or on the water, ring, courts, ovals, tracks, tables, range, greens, fairways, roads or mat, the Bendigo region has produced many greats.<\/p>\n<p>A list of 46 winners of gold as Sports Star of the Year includes champions from 22 sports.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2026\/03\/star60th-04_52534.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Faith Leech Inspiration Award recipient Ron Hiatt and Sports Star committee member Melinda Keighran.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There are so many factors behind success, but three key ingredients that were talked about by many recipients were belief, commitment and support.<\/p>\n<p>Before announcing Bendigo&#8217;s Sports Star of the Year for 2025, Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan spoke about the vast network behind every journey the latest award recipients are on, and acknowledged the support from those who inspired them.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2026\/03\/star60th-05_52583.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"493\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Michael McKern, Bendigo East Swimming Club coach-manager Anne Sherman and Peter Forbes, son of the late John Forbes.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ms Allan said talent, investment, and the sense of &#8220;having a go&#8221; have been among the strengths of a city that has unearthed so much sporting talent year after year.<\/p>\n<p>Dyson nets gold in 60th sports star awards.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2026\/03\/star60th-06_52513.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maya Murphy and Ainsley Dahl at the presentation of the Maxine Crouch Trust Fund as committee member Georgina Dungey looks on.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A high-flying guard with the Atlanta Hawks in the NBA, Bendigo-born and raised Dyson Daniels struck gold at the 60th presentation of Bendigo&#8217;s Sports Star of the Year awards.<\/p>\n<p>Many previous winners of the top honour were in the crowd when Ms Allan declared Dyson as the Bendigo region&#8217;s top sports star of the 2025 year.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2026\/03\/star60th-07_52549.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hannah Michelsen, granddaughter of Cryil Michelsen, and kayaking ace Tobias Sexton.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Existing commitments with Atlanta meant Dyson could not be at the event, but proud parents Ricky and Brikita accepted the gold statuette before video of Dyson&#8217;s acceptance speech was beamed on the big screens.<\/p>\n<p>The first Australian to earn the NBA&#8217;s Most Improved Player for the 2024-25 season and second in voting for the NBA&#8217;s Defensive Player of the Year are among many accolades Dyson has earnt.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2026\/03\/star60th-08_56660.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">La Trobe University Bendigo Head of Campus Margaret O&#8217;Rourke and Stay Near Go Far scholarship recipient Emily Davis-Tope.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This award means a lot to me.
