THE Marist Brass Band Bendigo is hoping to go one better at this weekend’s 2026 Australian National Band Championships in Brisbane after finishing runner up in the D grade brass band division last year.<\/p>\n

The Championships kicked off yesterday in multiple venues across the Sunshine State’s capital and continue until Sunday.<\/p>\n

The competition is known as the premier banding event in the nation, bringing together brass and concert bands from across Australia and beyond to perform, compete and celebrate the unique art of community banding.<\/p>\n

Pending this weekend’s results, the 2024 and 2025 State D grade champions are expected to be promoted to C grade for 2027 – a significant milestone that reflects the commitment, consistency and musical development of its players.<\/p>\n

“This trip to Brisbane represents not just a competition, but a celebration of community, hard work and the joy of making music together,” Band president John O’Connor said.<\/p>\n

“We’re incredibly proud of how far our players have come and can’t wait to perform alongside bands from all over the country.”<\/p>\n

Local audiences had the opportunity to preview the band’s Nationals repertoire at its ‘Countdown to nationals’ performance last Sunday at St. Liborius Primary school in Eaglehawk, led by accomplished musical director and conductor Colin Wellard.<\/p>\n

“Today’s really important to us, not just because you’re here supporting us as a community organisation, but also because this is our last play-out before we go to Brisbane,” Wellard said.<\/p>\n

“It’s going to be fabulous!”<\/p>\n

Following the Championships, regular rehearsals will resume in Bendigo with an open invitation extended to new members.<\/p>\n

Musicians of all ages and experience levels, including those returning to brass banding or keen to learn a brass or percussion instrument are welcome to join.<\/p>\n
