of reproductions of historic and contemporary portraits from its collection.<\/p>\n<p>Works chosen for The People&#8217;s Gallery: Portraits from the Collection were inspired by the Gallery\u2019s founding motto, Ad\u202fdelectationem\u202fPopuli per Artem\u202fPulchram: For the delight of the people through beautiful art.<\/p>\n<p>Spanning 150 years of art, the\u202fselection is said to celebrate\u202fthe humanity at the heart of\u202fall\u202fcreative\u202fendeavour.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2026\/04\/AGH2_90969.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" (2008).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Gallery director Jessica Bridgfoot said the display features many of the Gallery&#8217;s most beloved portraits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are the works we know visitors travel to see throughout the year, such as Thomas Sheard&#8217;s evocative The Arab Blacksmith (c. 1900) and Allan Ramsay&#8217;s King George III (c.1761),\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresenting these works on the perimeter of the building site is a way we can continue to share our treasured collection, and is one of a series of activities we have planned while the Gallery is closed.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2026\/04\/AGH1_90959.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bendigo artist Lauren Starr&#8217;s Midas\u2019 Daughter II \u2013 Golden Still Life (2022).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Portraits by Australian artists including Tom Roberts, Sidney Nolan and Hugh Ramsay are featured alongside contemporary works by artists such as Gordon Bennett, Abdul Abdullah, Patricia Piccinini and Yvette Coppersmith.<\/p>\n<p>Curator Emma Busowsky said the installation offers insight into changing societal values as well as artistic innovations throughout history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPortraiture has been an\u202fenduring form of\u202fart\u202fsince antiquity,\u202fused to commemorate\u202fnotable individuals,\u202fto represent the stories of\u202fordinary people\u202ffrom all\u202fwalks of life, and to powerfully explore identity,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe display also features many works by artists local to our city and region, including Donna Bailey, Andrew Goodman, and Pia Johnson.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The multi-million dollar Gallery refurbishment is the largest-ever civic infrastructure project to be led by the City.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cBendigo artist Lauren Starr&#8217;s dramatic portrait of her daughter, Midas\u2019 Daughter II \u2013 Golden Still Life (2022), winner of the 2022 Bluethumb Art Prize, is another of the works featured.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The multi-million dollar Gallery refurbishment is the largest-ever civic infrastructure project to be led by the City of Greater Bendigo, and
