{"id":114093,"date":"2026-05-11T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-10T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=114093"},"modified":"2026-05-06T19:30:38","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T09:30:38","slug":"infamous-intersections-on-road-to-rectification","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/news\/infamous-intersections-on-road-to-rectification\/","title":{"rendered":"Infamous intersections on road to rectification"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE notorious intersection of the Midland Highway and Howard Street in Epsom \u2013 voted the most dangerous intersection in regional Victoria in a 2024 RACV survey \u2013 will finally be fixed, the state government has promised.<\/p>\n<p>The government has also committed to installing a fully signalised intersection at Calder Highway and Maiden Gully Road, complete with a shared user path linking Maiden Gully to the City of Greater Bendigo&#8217;s trail network into the CBD.<\/p>\n<p>The pledges form part of a budget announcement that $73.4 million will be invested in regional Victoria to develop projects, tackle congestion and improve safety on key highways.<\/p>\n<p>It said it will work with the community and confirm delivery timelines on both projects at some point.<\/p>\n<p>Greater Bendigo mayor Cr Thomas Prince said the investments would deliver crucial upgrades to the important thoroughfares.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2026\/05\/EIS1_81135.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Midland Highway and Howard Street both carry about 10000 vehicles each day. Photo: Adam Carswell.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Both intersections have been long-time advocacy priorities of council, with significant work needed to improve safety and access,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Midland Highway is a key arterial road in our city, while Howard Street is a gazetted truck route, with both roads carrying approximately 10000 vehicles each day.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Significant development in Epsom has meant the current intersection is no longer adequate for the traffic and activity happening in the area.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In Maiden Gully, the Calder Highway is a key thoroughfare for the west of Bendigo, which has an important role in accommodating future growth for our city.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are grateful to the Victorian government for such significant investments in road projects in our region.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE notorious intersection of the Midland Highway and Howard Street in Epsom \u2013 voted the most dangerous intersection in regional Victoria in a 2024 RACV survey \u2013 will finally be fixed, the state government has promised.
