LOCAL Karen community member and La Trobe University student Chelsea Moowahshi has forged an inspiring path since entering the world a little over 18 years ago via a Thai refugee camp, and she has only just begun.<\/p>\n

After immigrating to Australia with her parents at the tender age of two, settling in Werribee and then Bendigo, she became the first in her family to attend high school, in this case Strathdale’s Victory Christian College.<\/p>\n

An enthusiastic student determineda to make the most of every opportunity that came her way, Moowahshi worked hard during secondary school and achieved excellent marks – enough, in fact, to be accepted by La Trobe University to study a double degree in Law (Honours) and Psychological Science.<\/p>\n

With a part-time job as a pharmacy assistant at Chemist Warehouse to add to her busy schedule, some relief has recently come about in the form of a Bendigo Bank Regional and Rural Scholarship, amounting to $6,500 per year for two years.<\/p>\n

“Receiving this scholarship means a lot to me as university is expensive and this will significantly reduce financial strain,” she said.<\/p>\n

“It will also allow me to not have to work as many hours, which will enable me to focus more on my studies, as well as take on unpaid internship opportunities.<\/p>\n

“What stood out to me about the Bendigo Bank scholarships is that they are very community driven, with a strong focus on supporting students in regional (and) rural communities.<\/p>\n

“I hope to use my degree to make a positive impact in my community.”<\/p>\n

Moowahshi is one of 320 students to receive scholarships for the academic year as part of Bendigo Bank’s $1.6 million 2026 Scholarship Program.<\/p>\n

Another 160 students have also received continuing financial support for 2026.<\/p>\n

Bendigo Bank chair Vicki Carter said the bank was thrilled to help support the next generation of leaders, innovators and community builders.<\/p>\n

“We understand the challenges many students, particularly those from regional and rural areas, face when pursuing further education,” she said.<\/p>\n

“Our program is a direct investment in their potential and a testament to our belief that supporting education is fundamental to building strong and resilient communities.<\/p>\n

“The impact of these scholarships should not be understated, and extends beyond financial aid, empowering students to focus on their studies and achieve their full potential.”<\/p>\n
