NATIONALLY treasured ex Hunters and Collectors frontman Mark Seymour makes a welcome return to Bendigo next weekend, bringing with him a decades-long songlist and plenty of tales to tell.<\/p>\n

Born and raised in country Victoria, Seymour said he’s looking forward to the visit, especially the chance to perform at the historic Capital Theatre.<\/p>\n

“I was in and around Bendigo when I was a little kid because we grew up in a lot of country towns, so it’s very familiar to me,” he said.<\/p>\n

“I really love the area, I love its history – I love the fact that it was part of the early settling of regional centres in Victoria.”<\/p>\n

Seymour said what excites him the most about playing in theatres like the Capital is the opportunity to “talk about the songs”.<\/p>\n

“The idea that they have a genesis, I think people, when they’re in that environment, they appreciate having something told to them that sets the music in a different context psychologically,” he said.<\/p>\n

“Each song has a lot of history and people are interested in what makes them happen, the circumstances are critical.<\/p>\n

“So, I’ll be doing quite a lot of talking, but I’ll keep it pretty spontaneous.”<\/p>\n

The oldest song in the set, according to the ARIA hall of famer, will be enduring classic Throw Your Arms Around Me, which was first released in 1984 and appeared on Hunters and Collectors’ fourth studio album, Human Frailty.<\/p>\n

He said the much-loved ballad had “very, very small beginnings”.<\/p>\n

“It was a bit of a surprise for the boys,” he said.<\/p>\n

“I vividly remember taking it into the room and feeling really self-conscious about it, realising it was something special because the idea of telling the story of a romantic relationship was new territory.<\/p>\n

“I wasn’t sure whether they would react to it well – there wasn’t a lot said at the time, but everyone joined in.<\/p>\n

“The idea of material being elevated on a mass commercial level, it did happen, but that particular song, there was never any plan in that regard.<\/p>\n

“I don’t think the band grasped its level of appeal until it was really staring us in the face, because we were eventually playing it to thousands of people, all singing the chorus.<\/p>\n

“It never really got massive radio airplay – it did get some, and it still does, but just enough.<\/p>\n

“In a weird way, it’s not really a rock song, it defies categorisation – it sounds like a folk ballad to me.”<\/p>\n
