{"id":114818,"date":"2026-06-04T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-03T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=114818"},"modified":"2026-06-03T17:10:18","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T07:10:18","slug":"jawsome-rob-gives-a-glimpse-of-his-upside","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/sport\/jawsome-rob-gives-a-glimpse-of-his-upside\/","title":{"rendered":"Jawsome Rob gives a glimpse of his upside"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>JAWSOME Rob dispelled doubts about his capacity over 1500m and on firmer ground, breaking through for a maiden win on his home track at Bendigo last Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The five-year-old gelding gave his trainer Annalise Maragos her fourth career winner with a tough 1.5-length win at career start number five.<\/p>\n<p>Maragos had expressed reservations pre-race over whether Jawsome Rob could produce his best over the distance and on a Good 4.<\/p>\n<p>His previous best effort and sole placing came on a Heavy 9 at Bendigo last September, while leading into the race, he had a won a trial 10 days earlier over 1300m on a Heavy 9.<\/p>\n<p>Any fears were shortlived as the son of Grunt, who was put into a good resting spot in third during the run behind the leaders The Alpina Penguin and Saker Falcon by Declan Bates, hit the lead early in the straight before kicking clear with 200m to run.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was a great ride from Declan, he just gave him a peach of a run. (The horse) was doing no work,&#8221; Maragos said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I know the track was a bit firm, but he didn&#8217;t have many excuses today.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was super to see his head over the line.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A maiden win was a long time coming for the at times deceptive Jawsome Rob, who made his race debut at Echuca just over two years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You watch him and he looks like he&#8217;s going that slow. Photo: Brett Holburt\/Racing Photos.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was great to see him kick a bit like that as he usually just a bit one-paced and reel out good sectionals for a good amount of time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But it was good to see him kick off a bit and be a bit versatile.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It was a special moment for Maragos, whose small team comprises a mix of younger and lightly-raced horses with a few tried gallopers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are still battling away with our tried horses at the moment, but we&#8217;ve got a couple of young ones,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Not that he&#8217;s young \u2026 but with his experience. It&#8217;s good to have him coming up, same with Koyuga Rip, and we have a couple of other nice young horses coming through too.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We love the older tried horses, but these younger ones you have put all the work into, it&#8217;s really rewarding.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The three-year-old Koyuga Rip finished a nice first-up fourth two races earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Bates hailed the win as &#8216;dominant&#8217; and praised Maragos for producing the gelding in great order.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s a big boy, but once you canter onto the track, he&#8217;s actually a gentleman to be honest \u2026 which I was hopeful for. If he did play up, he&#8217;d be quite a handful,&#8221; Bates, who rode a double on Friday, said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We lobbed into a good spot and he just maintained a nice gallop to win nicely.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When he heard them coming late, he actually picked up again and was solid to the line.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s definitely got an upside. A good win today and they&#8217;ve got plenty of options with him.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He could get further, but at the same time, he&#8217;s good over the mile.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Especially on a wet track it could be ideal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It shouldn&#8217;t be his last win.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>JAWSOME Rob dispelled doubts about his capacity over 1500m and on firmer ground, breaking through for a maiden win on his home track at Bendigo last Friday.
