CONSTRUCTION of a new development comprising three three-bedroom properties that will house women and children who have experienced family violence has been completed.<\/p>\n
The project was made possible by the federal government’s Safe Places grants program, with each dwelling designed to be physically accessible, low-maintenance, environmentally sustainable and energy efficient.<\/p>\n
It was delivered by Haven Home Safe, which contributed the land and oversaw the development process, alongside key partners Annie North and the Centre for Non-Violence, which provided feedback to make sure the properties would best meet the needs of renters.<\/p>\n
Haven Home Safe chief executive officer Trudi Ray said it is important to her organisation that there are affordable and accessible housing options for women and children escaping family violence in regional cities and towns.<\/p>\n
“These are beautiful, high-quality homes that have been designed with care and consideration for the needs of renters,” she said.<\/p>\n
“Each home has (a) seven-star energy rating, solar collection, rainwater tanks as well as energy efficient heating, cooling and hot water, meaning that renters will have reduced household bills and less financial stress.”<\/p>\n
Michelle Crawford, Annie North’s chief executive officer, said safe housing is the foundation from which women and children can begin again.<\/p>\n
“For the women, children and young people that Annie North supports, the development of these beautiful properties means safety, dignity and the opportunity to move from crisis toward stability and independence.” she said.<\/p>\n
“This is what meaningful collaboration looks like.<\/p>\n
“When government, community housing, and the family violence sector work together in a meaningful way, women, children and young people have a stronger foundation for healing and recovery.”<\/p>\n
