Every supporter base thinks it gets a rough run. That has always been part of football. But what is different now is the level of confusion around what is going to be paid, particularly in marking contests and with the last disposal out-of-bounds rule.<\/p>\n<p>That is where the frustration is coming from.<\/p>\n<p><iframe data-testid=\"embed-iframe\" style=\"border-radius:12px\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/episode\/6zRBUDWl0a4xKCamJmyteX?utm_source=generator&#038;si=56cff4c74e0c4c3d\" width=\"100%\" height=\"152\" frameBorder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Damien Hardwick made plenty of headlines with his comments after Gold Coast\u2019s loss to Geelong, comparing GMHBA Stadium to the Roman Colosseum and suggesting the crowd had an influence on some decisions. He probably went too far. Senior coaches know they cannot publicly unload on umpires and expect no reaction from the AFL. Their words carry weight, and there are enough people lining up to criticise umpires without coaches adding more heat.<\/p>\n<p>But I also do not think you can just dismiss the broader point.<\/p>\n<p>There were decisions in that game that looked soft. A couple of marking contests were paid as arm chops when the ball had already basically come loose. Technically, you might be able to explain them. But that is the problem. When a decision needs a long explanation after everyone at the ground has already reacted one way, it does not feel right.<\/p>\n<p>That was the exact question raised on radio this week. If the player has already dropped the ball, how is it still being paid as a chop of the arms? It can still be a free kick by the letter of the law, but I understand why supporters, players and coaches get frustrated by it. You see one paid one night, then you see a more obvious one missed in another game, and people start asking what the standard actually is.<\/p>\n<p>That is not always bias. Most of the time it is inconsistency.<\/p>\n<p>The last disposal rule is another one that needs cleaning up. I like the idea of it. We do not want players deliberately taking the ball out of bounds. We want the game moving. But when the ball accidentally flicks off a bloke\u2019s boot because he has been tackled, bumped or had the ball knocked into him, that is not what the rule should be there for.<\/p>\n<p>There is a difference between a player choosing to kick the ball out and the ball just hitting his foot on the way through. The game has to be umpired with feel, not just with a technical reading of every moment.<\/p>\n<p>That matters because players start reacting to the whistle instead of the ball. A defender becomes hesitant. A winger second-guesses whether to take territory. A forward stops attacking the contest naturally because he is worried about giving away a technical free. That is when interpretation starts shaping behaviour, and that is the danger.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, teams cannot hide behind umpiring. If you lose clearly, the review cannot be about the whistle. It has to be about contest, pressure, connection and whether your system stood up for long enough. Umpiring might frustrate you, but it rarely explains a full result.<\/p>\n<p>Home ground advantage is real too. At GMHBA Stadium, the Geelong crowd is close, loud and involved. Good. That is what home clubs are supposed to create. If opposition clubs want that same influence, they need to build it at their own grounds. Get people there. Make noise. Put pressure on.<\/p>\n<p>The AFL\u2019s job is simple. Do not overreact every time a coach says something emotional, but do not ignore why people are frustrated either. Clarify the rules. Tighten the interpretations.
