BOUNDARY bending Tasmanian space-rock outfit Golden Sunbird is on course to touch down in Bendigo on Sunday 5 July for twin shows in a venue beyond the realms of normality.<\/p>\n

Combining original compositions with custom astronomical visuals, the performances will happen within the Discovery Science and Technology Centre’s seven-metre-high planetarium.<\/p>\n

The band’s singer, guitarist and principal songwriter Luke Thomas said the concept for its current six-date tour originated from the desire to find the spaciest venues that the band could play in.<\/p>\n

“Planetariums have been used for decades for people to go and learn about astronomy, the constellations, the stars and their place in the universe,” he said.<\/p>\n

“I thought with projections, live music and comfortable seats, wouldn’t they be the perfect venue to watch a band?<\/p>\n

“That’s how it started and we’ve been going from there.”<\/p>\n

Thomas said a bespoke visual show screened in sync with the band’s music will also be prominent.<\/p>\n

“We’ve worked with an astronomer from Launceston and he’s created half of the show using a system called Digistar,” he said.<\/p>\n

“It’s a guided journey through the solar system – you orbit around planets, and we play live instrumentation while the visuals take you through space.<\/p>\n

“We try to shift the consciousness so people can escape the reality they’re in to a completely new world. That’s our goal, escapism.”<\/p>\n

Thomas said the band is really looking forward to the visit.<\/p>\n

“We’re extremely excited to see the venue and to meet everyone,” he said.<\/p>\n
