	{"id":115559,"date":"2026-07-02T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-01T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=115559"},"modified":"2026-07-01T22:13:42","modified_gmt":"2026-07-01T12:13:42","slug":"winning-week-for-local-training-ranks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/sport\/winning-week-for-local-training-ranks\/","title":{"rendered":"Winning week for local training ranks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>IT was a good week for Bendigo trainers last week, with three individual stables scoring wins over three consecutive days.<\/p>\n<p>Veteran trainer Leslie Robertson started the ball rolling at Ballarat Synthetic on Wednesday when his recent acquisition Cumboogle made it back-to-back 1000m wins at the venue.<\/p>\n<p>Jarrod Robinson continued the momentum by notching up an overdue home track win on Thursday with Scoobartie.<\/p>\n<p>Back at Ballarat Synthetic on Friday, Toby Lake chimed in with an impressive maiden with the exciting former Western Australian sprinter Tennessee Spirit.<\/p>\n<p>Out of the same dam (Pomelo) as Lake&#8217;s Listed race placegetter Fieldelo, the three-year-old filly debuted for Lake with a second at Caulfield in late-May following three Western Australian starts.<\/p>\n<p>She followed up with a sixth at Wangaratta, but always looked well-placed to break her maiden when sent around as a $2.10 favourite on the Ballarat Synthetic, ridden by apprentice Zac Moore.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was fantastic to get a win for Ace Bloodstock; we purchased her online, they jumped on board later on,&#8221; Lake said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hopefully the start of a good relationship.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We put the blinkers on to help her not feel the pressure as much.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There was a fair bit of pressure in the race at Wangaratta the other day. I know it was heavy ground and she probably had some excuses, I felt like she felt the pressure too much and bottomed out at the end.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Zac trialled her, so knew her well and took some weight off her.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s the way to ride her \u2013 not fight her, just let her flow.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She&#8217;s always going to look like she&#8217;s empty at the end because you are running fast fractions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If she continues that, she should be able to win a few more for us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/07\/Scoobartie-35800_92638_tn_w600.jpg\" alt=\"Scoobartie, ridden by Brad Rawiller, wins the Cathcart Smash Repairs Maiden Plate at Bendigo on 25 June. Photo: Brett Holburt\/Racing Photos.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Lake praised an astute ride by Moore before revealing a funny story behind his booking for the ride on Tennessee Spirit.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One of my best mates is called Zac Moore, and I couldn&#8217;t find Zac&#8217;s manager the other day, so I got my phone out and rang Zac Moore and I rang the wrong Zac,&#8221; he said<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hopefully he followed us in and was able to back it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She wouldn&#8217;t have had 54.5kg, I know that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Apprenticed to Ciaron Maher, the 28-year-old who finished Friday with a double praised a polished performance by Tennessee Spirit.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She has a very high-cruising speed; probably didn&#8217;t even tire to the line, the last 50m. But it was all put to bed by then,&#8221; Moore said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I didn&#8217;t want to ask her to come back or do too much early \u2026 just keep her where she was comfortable.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I just tried to keep her in that happy medium. I trialled her up and knew what she had under the hood, it was just a matter of getting the first part (of the race) right.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe horse was very impressive.\u201dScoobartie breaks string of placings<\/p>\n<p>A maiden win for Scoobartie on a soft 6 at Bendigo was not without its challenges, according to victorious trainer Robinson.<\/p>\n<p>Purchased online by Darren Veal for a mere $1,500 over a year ago, the now three-year-old gelding was quickly diagnosed with sesamoiditis, an inflammation of the proximal sesamoid bones, often resulting from repetitive strain, acute trauma, or infection.<\/p>\n<p>Debuting with a third at Echuca last September, Scoobartie had been placed in five of his six starts, including four seconds, before last week&#8217;s win.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have had to be very patient with him and touch wood it hasn&#8217;t worried him at all and he&#8217;s reaping the rewards now,&#8221; Robinson said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I know he likes it wet, so he&#8217;ll handle a heavy track if he has to,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ll just try to get his confidence up and teach him how to win and hopefully he&#8217;ll keep doing it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ridden by Brad Rawiller, Scoobartie jumped nicely from barrier one and was never headed after entering the straight in front under a tight rein, powering away for a soft 3-length win.<\/p>\n<p>Rawiller, who has ridden the son of Flying Artie in each of his last three starts, said he had been immediately impressed by the gelding.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He got beaten by a smart one (first-up) and I could not have been more confident going into the Swan Hill Cup Carnival,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/07\/Cumboogle-70730_04753_tn_w600.jpg\" alt=\"Cumboogle, ridden by Olivia East, wins the Hygain Edge Benchmark 66 Handicap at Ballarat Synthetic on 24 June. Photo: Pat Scala\/Racing Photos.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was probably a bit disappointed that we didn&#8217;t win with the run we had.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But the third horse has since come out and won by four (lengths) at Wangaratta, and he was even better (last Thursday).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s going in the right direction.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Two on the trot for Cumboogle<\/p>\n<p>Known for his unique training practices, Robertson revealed the unorthodox secret to Cumboogle&#8217;s success following the six-year-old gelding&#8217;s win last Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Well, we don&#8217;t go on the track with him,&#8221; he said. &#8220;He knows how to gallop, so what I do is bull ring him with the other couple of horses in the big bull ring, and they go about 10 to 15 laps flat out.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Then we take him over and swim two laps, we give him a day off, and then we do the same again.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That just gets his wind right, and he&#8217;ll do the rest.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>RoHaving only his fourth start for Robertson after 37 for his previous trainer Brett Thompson at Gulgong in the Mudgee region of New South Wales, Cumboogle has shown anbertson was unlucky not to make it a double for the week, with his evergreen 10-year-old sprinter Raging Monkey only narrowly beaten into second place at Echuca on Tuesday.Into his 60th year in the training caper, Robertson has six winners this season, including three with El Salto.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>IT was a good week for Bendigo trainers last week, with three individual stables scoring wins over three consecutive days.
