{"id":115570,"date":"2026-07-06T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-05T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=115570"},"modified":"2026-07-02T22:02:14","modified_gmt":"2026-07-02T12:02:14","slug":"zero-public-transport-leaving-residents-at-a-loss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/news\/zero-public-transport-leaving-residents-at-a-loss\/","title":{"rendered":"Zero public transport leaving residents at a loss"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A petition has been launched calling for buses to service the growing township of Marong, located approximately 15 kilometres west of Bendigo&#8217;s town centre.<\/p>\n<p>Petition coordinator Ajay Mishra said with desperate calls for the route, the needs of the Marong community have to be prioritised.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As of today, the only way to commute is using private vehicles,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The bus service will not only provide easier commute access but also instill a sense of independence.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Having public transport is not a luxury, but a basic necessity for the community &#8211; the ratepayers of Marong deserve greater value from their investment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Peter Bryar, a member of the Marong Community Action Group, said there are many people who may not have a second car, and with fuel prices increasing there is no doubt that public transport is needed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Since (a bus service) comes to Maiden Gully, why can&#8217;t it come an extra five kilometres?&#8221; he asked.<\/p>\n<p>Billed as one of the fastest-growing areas within the region, the City of Greater Bendigo&#8217;s managed growth strategy earmarks Marong as a key growth corridor and a future satellite town.<\/p>\n<p>It has been reported to have the capacity to house approximately 8000 residents, with the future nearby Bendigo Regional Employment Precinct also expected to generate as many as 6000 direct and indirect employment opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Mishra said he is willing to go door-to-door to gather as many signatures as he can.<\/p>\n<p>The petition is live on the <a href=\"http:\/\/change.org\/p\/petition-public-transport-bus-services-to-marong-in-victoria\">change.org<\/a> website.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A petition has been launched calling for buses to service the growing township of Marong, located approximately 15 kilometres west of Bendigo&#8217;s town centre.
