{"id":115768,"date":"2026-07-10T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-09T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=115768"},"modified":"2026-07-08T19:54:17","modified_gmt":"2026-07-08T09:54:17","slug":"cvfl-vows-redemption-for-ballarat-loss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/sport\/cvfl-vows-redemption-for-ballarat-loss\/","title":{"rendered":"CVFL vows redemption for Ballarat loss"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CVFL joint interleague coach Eloise Gretgrix says the senior women&#8217;s team will take some lessons from Ballarat defeating them last weekend, but will return more eager than ever next season.<\/p>\n<p>Up against a BFLW team playing in its first-ever interleague game, Central Victoria was beaten 2.1 (13) to 5.9 (39) on a muddy Alfredton Recreation Reserve.<\/p>\n<p>Down by 30 points at three-quarter-time, Central Victoria never gave up, with the side&#8217;s second goal narrowing the margin to 26 points at full-time.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2026\/07\/DSC_0881_29140.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"610\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Taylah Moore looks to punch the ball clear for Central Victoria as Eillish Cumming shows plenty of courage backing into the pack.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But it was a pair of goalless quarters in the second and third that ultimately resigned Central Victoria to its first loss in its last nine interleague encounters.<\/p>\n<p>Admitting to being disappointed, Gretgrix \u2013 who coached alongside Leigh Stewart \u2013 could not fault the side&#8217;s endeavour and resilience to push through to the end.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It would have been nice to put a few more goals on the board, but it was a nice lesson learned for our girls,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2026\/07\/DSC_0094_31598.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"539\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">L-R: Sasha Pearce snaps Central Victoria&#8217;s first goal during the opening quarter at Alfredton Recreation Reserve. Tellingly, they&#8217;ve been training for eight weeks and we&#8217;ve been training for three.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They are obviously used to playing with each other and being around each other \u2026 and in this weather.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They get to play in it a lot, which is an advantage, but there&#8217;s no taking away from what they did. Photo: Kieran Iles.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Gretgrix said there was merit in an extended interleague preparation as deployed by Ballarat for its first-up assignment, albeit not a full eight-week program.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You could tell by the way they positioned themselves that they were definitely well drilled,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They were getting around each other early and we didn&#8217;t quite get up today. We tried.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A standout in last year&#8217;s 73-point win over Millewa in Mildura, Taylah Moore was again tireless in the ruck and defence and never waned in her efforts to lift her Central Victorian teammates. Photo: Kieran Iles.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Wedge-Tailed Eagles&#8217; Teagan Ainslie racked up plenty of the ball, while Eaglehawk&#8217;s Lucy El Hage, Castlemaine&#8217;s Eillish Cumming and Golden Square&#8217;s Gemma Roberts all toiled hard.<\/p>\n<p>From Ballarat&#8217;s perspective, coach Danyel Waters said her side had fully embraced its underdog status.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While it was great to break that (Central Victorian) streak, just the way the girls brought the heart and the pressure from that first quarter was amazing and we didn&#8217;t let up,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I couldn&#8217;t be prouder of their effort.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2026\/07\/DSC_0096_89652.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"466\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hollie Maher clears the CVFL out of defence.
