Bendigo bus passengers will be among the first in Victoria to benefit from the Allan Labor Government’s rollout of contactless “tap and go” payments, with the new technology becoming available on local bus services from Sunday.<\/p>\n

The rollout will see more than 2,500 myki-enabled buses progressively switched over to accept payments using a Visa or Mastercard bank card, smartphone or smartwatch.<\/p>\n

Bendigo is included in the first stage of the rollout alongside Ballarat, Seymour, Geelong, Traralgon, Warragul, Bacchus Marsh, Sunbury, Berwick, Cranbourne and the Yarra Valley.<\/p>\n

The statewide rollout is expected to be completed by Sunday, July 26, when all Melbourne bus routes will also be equipped with the technology.<\/p>\n

Once complete, passengers will be able to use contactless payment across every myki-enabled train station, tram and bus in Victoria.<\/p>\n

During the transition period, passengers are encouraged to look for the Visa or Mastercard logo on bus ticket readers to confirm whether tap and go is available on their service.<\/p>\n

Public Transport Victoria advises passengers to continue carrying their myki card while the rollout is underway, as not all buses will be activated immediately. Passengers transferring between bus services should also continue using myki until the rollout is complete.<\/p>\n

More than 2.3 million tap and go trips have been recorded since trials began in March, with station staff available to assist passengers as the rollout continues.<\/p>\n

Concession passengers, seniors and people under 18 should continue using their concession or free Youth myki cards. Passengers who prefer to use a myki can continue to do so.<\/p>\n

Acting Minister for Public and Active Transport Nick Staikos said the expansion would make travelling on public transport more convenient.<\/p>\n

“From Sunday, tap and go will progressively roll out on buses across Victoria, making getting around even easier,” Mr Staikos said.<\/p>\n

“More than two million tap and go trips have been taken, demonstrating Victorians love the convenience of using their bank card or phone to travel.”<\/p>\n

“Whether it’s a train, a tram or now a bus, we’re making it simpler for Victorians to get where they need to go.”<\/p>\n
