	{"id":74551,"date":"2021-02-25T04:38:18","date_gmt":"2021-02-24T17:38:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=74551"},"modified":"2022-02-27T11:26:08","modified_gmt":"2022-02-27T00:26:08","slug":"why-melbourne-is-always-a-threat-of-losing-the-australian-open","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/sport\/why-melbourne-is-always-a-threat-of-losing-the-australian-open\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Melbourne is always a threat of losing the Australian Open"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AUSTRALIAN Open tournament director Craig Tiley has conceded the tournament\u2019s status on the tour isn\u2019t set in stone like some may think.<\/p>\n<p>The Victorian Government and Tennis Australia have a contract for the Australian Open to take place at Melbourne Park until at least the end of 2039, in a new agreement that was inked days before this year\u2019s tournament.<\/p>\n<p>But as other countries continue to eye Australia\u2019s biggest annual international sporting event, Tiley explained that Tennis Australia\u2019s insistence to do as much as possible to entice the players down under every year is one of the key reasons why the event continues to hold its place as one of the four Grand Slams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt always is [a threat for the event to be moved overseas],\u201d Tilly said on SEN\u2019s Dwayne\u2019s World.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven though we have a contract until 2039 for the government, it doesn\u2019t mean that if we didn\u2019t have the event for a few years and another country put in a lot of money for a big event that it\u2019s easy to play at, then they [top players] wouldn\u2019t come here.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only reason we get the players here is because we offer a lot of prizemoney and we spend a lot of time pursuing them to come.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe other Grand Slams they played last year, they didn\u2019t have to fly so far or do 14 days of quarantine, so we have to overcome those and get the top players to play here.<\/p>\n<p>Karolina Muchova\u2019s shock three-set victory over world number one Ash Barty was overshadowed by a controversial medical time out the Czech 25th seed took, which she later admitted was for dizziness.<\/p>\n<p>Barty was up a set and a break at the time when Muchova left the court and on the resumption of play, turned the match around.<\/p>\n<p>Tiley admitted that he personally isn\u2019t a fan of the medical time out rule and said an alternative interpretation could be considered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not a big fan of the time out rule, but it\u2019s the rule,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s currently what the rule is, they players can lobby to have the rule change \u2013 the rule is open for interpretation and abuse so I think that could been looked at differently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>-BY LAURENCE ROSEN\/ SEN<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AUSTRALIAN Open tournament director Craig Tiley has conceded the tournament\u2019s status on the tour isn\u2019t set in stone like some may think.
