AFTER an eleven-month COVID induced hiatus, the Bendigo Repair Cafe was back in action on Saturday.<\/p>\n

In the hall off to the side of the Old Church on the Hill volunteers were busy fixing everything from furniture to electronics and clothing, all with the aim of diverting what could have been rubbish from landfill and doing their best to give things a second life.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe whole thing about repair is acknowledging the throwaway society and the impact that has on the environment,\u201d said Repair Cafe co-coordinator Elsie L\u2019Huillier.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it\u2019s also cultural thing around the way individuals think about their lives. We talk about seven Rs, there were five, but they are putting in there now \u2018rechoose\u2019. We need to make choices about our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for what it\u2019s like to be back and making a difference in a COVID-safe way, Ms L\u2019Huillier was emphatic.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s great!\u201d she said. \u201cWe didn\u2019t know if we\u2019d get one or a million people coming, but really we\u2019ve got to keep it under 20 anyways.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all really get along well, so there\u2019s a great sense of camaraderie among us a fixers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Robyn Ryan was one of the many people who came along with things that needed looking at, brining two items in need of repair – a classic record player made in the 1960s, and mechanical music box.<\/p>\n

Both pieces held important sentimental value to her.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe music box was given to me when I was 12 years old, and it\u2019s not working anymore,\u201d she said. \u201cThe little dancing girl\u2019s come off and hopefully someone can fix it and we can get her going.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe record player was my older brothers. I\u2019ve carried both items around and moved many times and taken them with me everywhere I\u2019ve gone.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I saw this advertised I thought what a great idea.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fixing Ms Ryan\u2019s record player was volunteer Adam Bradley.<\/p>\n

A member of the Repair Cafe\u2019s small team from the beginning three years ago, he\u2019s been busy all morning. Before looking at the old turn table he was outside seeing to a bike, and he\u2019s got more to do afterwards.<\/p>\n

\u201cI usually get categorised as a general fixer,\u201d he said. \u201cWhatever comes through, excluding sewing, I try and sort out.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis record player is a bit of a challenge as it\u2019s a bit out of my age bracket. It\u2019s a good learning experience for me, so that\u2019s why I enjoy it.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the working week Mr Bradley is an IT software and hardware tech, and while he said that was an area of interest for him, what he gets from being part of the Repair Cafe\u2019s small team of dedicated volunteers is much broader.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s more about the community group than anything else,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy son [Toby] is here on an off as well and we try and get him involved to have a bit more of a mindset about being a part of something bigger.\u201d<\/p>\n

While you might think that a repair cafe is just about fixing hardware like electronics or furniture to save it from landfill, the Bendigo group also puts a focus on the artistic side of the movement.<\/p>\n

When it comes to clothing, the team of sewers and stitchers don\u2019t just fix holes they upcycle fashion.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are decorative things that we\u2019re doing when we\u2019re repairing,\u201d Ms L\u2019Huillier said. \u201cThere\u2019s a whole movement now that if I have a hole in a garment and I fix it with a big red cross, I\u2019m wearing a badge to say \u2018I\u2019ve fixed this\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n
