As part of the Mary Quant: Fashion Revolutionary<\/em> exhibition, Australia\u2019s oldest working pottery is giving people the chance to try their hand at painting portraits on plates.<\/p>\n Decorator, artist and potter Sarahjane Clarke said the classes are all about personal expression.<\/p>\n \u201cThe class is a basic class, it\u2019s basic technique enabling people to express,\u201d she said. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t have to be literal; portraiture can be anything to the emotion.<\/p>\n \u201cIt doesn\u2019t have to be the entirety of a face; it can be the whisper of a smile or the wink of an eye.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s not a photograph, it\u2019s painting and expression.\u201d<\/p>\n With the ceramic plates produced on site, Bendigo Pottery co-owner Sally Thomson said the decorating class will add to the experience of people who have visited the Mary Quant exhibition.<\/p>\n \u201cWe just thought we would offer something for people who, if they\u2019re coming to the Mary Quant exhibition, might be able to have a go to express your response to that by painting a plate and a bowl as well,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n \u201cI think that\u2019s why everyone loves the experience, whether it\u2019s going to a cooking class, painting something or a wine tasting.<\/p>\n \u201cThat participation takes your experience to another level other than just observing.\u201d<\/p>\n Ms Clarke said the exhibition will provide plenty of inspiration for people to do their own artwork.<\/p>\n \u201cOnce you\u2019ve walked around the exhibition and seen how that\u2019s been translated, it\u2019s interpreting that yourself,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n \u201cThere might be particular colours or movement that you find exciting, and you want to reproduce that on your plate.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s taking inspiration from what\u2019s around you and making that your own.\u201d<\/p>\n For Portrait on a Plate bookings, visit Bendigo Pottery\u2019s Facebook page.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" TAKE home your own piece of Mary Quant-inspired artwork at Bendigo Pottery.
