{"id":75398,"date":"2021-04-29T04:58:38","date_gmt":"2021-04-28T18:58:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=75398"},"modified":"2022-02-27T11:06:41","modified_gmt":"2022-02-27T00:06:41","slug":"thousands-gather-for-anzac-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/news\/thousands-gather-for-anzac-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Thousands gather for Anzac Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THIS year\u2019s events saw the return of crowds, as hundreds of veterans and thousands of spectators honoured those that paid the ultimate sacrifice.<\/p>\n<p>Attendance was estimated at around 2000 for the dawn service, and 4000 for the 10.15am service, which also marked 100 years of the Royal Australia Air Force.<\/p>\n<p>Bendigo District RSL president Peter Swandale said given the restrictions on numbers and registrations it was great to see the return of the traditional services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery pleased to see the amount of people coming out today, the Bendigo community, just absolute fantastic,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_75400\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75400\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-75400\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/1W5A0466-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2021\/04\/1W5A0466-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2021\/04\/1W5A0466-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2021\/04\/1W5A0466-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2021\/04\/1W5A0466-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2021\/04\/1W5A0466-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2021\/04\/1W5A0466-272x182.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-75400\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A catafalque party member stands solemnly during the Bendigo Dawn Service.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s difficult within the challenges we have and what we had to do, but overall, everyone was pleased that they could come together and commemorate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anzac Day events coordinator Cassandra Liddy said they had a lot less time to prepare this year\u2019s commemorations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsually, we start planning this as soon as Remembrance Day finishes so by December we are planning for Anzac Day,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of factors go into it, road closures, council event permits, everything else and then we\u2019ve gone just a little bit further which included having to do registrations this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very pleased with how it went today, I would\u2019ve loved to have a lot more veterans here, I had just over 300 register to attend the march and the service and from what I could see I think they did attend which is great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The morning service started with a flypast piloted by flight Lieutenant Guy Bourke, to mark the centenary of the RAAF.<\/p>\n<p>The service included a prayer from Reverend John South, Bendigo Senior Secondary College students Amelia Bailey and Amber Chong reading an Anzac reflection and the Anzac requiem.<\/p>\n<p>Tributes were paid to fallen Anzacs during the Gallipoli landing, as well as those killed or wounded in other Australian campaigns.<\/p>\n<p>Vietnam veteran Wes Bertoch was deployed in 1967, and said the service is time for reflection between fellow veterans and mates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t glorify war;
