A NOXIOUS state prohibited weed is popping up in Bendigo backyards.<\/p>\n
Known as alligator weed, Agriculture Victoria\u2019s leading biosecurity officer Emily Hill said its growth in the region has the potential to cause harm.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlligator weed is native to South America and is regarded as one of the worst weeds,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is a declared noxious weed in all states and territories of Australia because of the harm it can cause to the economy and environment.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlligator weed is a particularly hard weed to eradicate because it grows rapidly both on land and in water. It can grow from plant fragments spreading from a parent infestation to produce new infestations downstream.<\/p>\n
\u201cMats of alligator weed can cover an extensive area, impact on irrigation and recreational activities, displace local native flora, damage habitat for native animals, clog up drains and other infrastructure and block water flow.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOn land it can be spread by mowing or sharing plants and can quickly invade your yard, making a mess of backyard gardens, smothering other plants and spreading to congest waterways.\u201d<\/p>\n
Alligator weed can be mistaken for the similarly looking Mukunuwenna vegetable, also known as sessile joyweed, which has short, round leaves, but is unsafe to consume \u201cas it accumulates heavy metals from the soil,\u201d according to Ms Hill.<\/p>\n
Anyone who spots alligator weed should not attempt to remove it themselves as Agriculture Victoria is responsible for its eradication.<\/p>\n
\u201cPlease don\u2019t attempt to treat or dispose of this weed yourself. Agriculture Victoria will treat, remove and dispose of alligator weed safely, and at no cost to the landowner,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
