{"id":76195,"date":"2021-06-12T04:57:03","date_gmt":"2021-06-11T18:57:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=76195"},"modified":"2022-02-27T11:01:07","modified_gmt":"2022-02-27T00:01:07","slug":"old-church-fosters-new-connections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/news\/old-church-fosters-new-connections\/","title":{"rendered":"Old Church fosters new connections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ATOP Russell Street in Quarry Hill sits an old church with a new purpose.<\/p>\n<p>Co-founder of the Old Church on the Hill, Rose Vincent, said the organisation allows people to develop deeper links with their community by offering space and support to resident-led groups.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people are looking for connection and for an opportunity to be able to contribute in a small way even to the common good,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Old Church is place where people can meet others and what I love about it is that it\u2019s intergenerational\u2026 and there\u2019s people from other cultures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReally what it\u2019s doing is, by offering a space and by offering other volunteers to come and support that, we\u2019re able to strengthen an initiative that\u2019s coming from a grassroots community group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not a hall for hire, we\u2019re rather a community space partnering with other community groups and associations.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_76200\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76200\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-76200\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/IMG_1870-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-76200\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Families enjoy a community lunch at the Old Church, held every Tuesday at 12.30pm. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Over 30 groups use the space for a variety of offerings including Latin dance classes, craft groups and even a ukulele orchestra, and since becoming incorporated as Neighbourhood Collective Australia earlier this year the Old Church can add to this list.<\/p>\n<p>As co-CEO of the not for profit, Ms Vincent said \u201cThat\u2019s going to mean that we\u2019re able to broaden our work\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeighbourhood Collective Australia will increase our impact and our scope in the sense that we\u2019re able to connect with more people who might be isolated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Vincent said the Old Church had already started to experience such an increase, as those isolated by last year\u2019s lockdowns sought connection to their community when restrictions eased.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve really struggled during the last year and this is part of their self-care to actually come along and get involved in things that are happening at the Old Church,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is seriously happening. I cannot believe how many extra people I\u2019ve met just in the last few months as we\u2019ve opened up who are in a way self-referring to community.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_76201\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76201\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-76201\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/IMG_3664-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-76201\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Organisations like the Bendigo Repair Caf\u00e9 also use the space. Photo: FILE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ms Vincent said the Old Church uses an asset-based community development model in its work, highlighting the strengths of communities rather than their shortfalls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been a community planner for quite a long time and involved in community development projects in regional places for most of my working life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think part of the problem is that community services have in a lot of ways, instead of working with what\u2019s strong in communities, have come from outside of a community targeting what\u2019s wrong.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCertainly, we need services and professionals but they need to be coming alongside and looking at what communities are doing and working with what\u2019s strong there already.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For more information or to get involved visit <strong>theoldchurchonthehill.com<\/strong> or join the Old Church on the Hill Facebook group.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ATOP Russell Street in Quarry Hill sits an old church with a new purpose.
