ARTWORK, woodcraft, and even a decorated toilet from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islands artists is on display at Dudley House until Sunday.<\/p>\n
Yorta Yorta woman, artist and curator Janet Bromley has carefully selected the works for the Knuldoorong Art Exhibition, showcasing First Nations culture.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne of the things I try to do is to have your eye drawn to the next thing, so you don\u2019t get to a place where you think I\u2019ve seen enough and walk out,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Every year I\u2019m blown away by quality of the art, the variety of the art and also the colour.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cFor ever and ever Aboriginal people have communicated with song, dance and mark-making.<\/p>\n
\u201cPainting is a part of mark-making, this is a natural thing for Aboriginal people to do, this is storytelling to tell you about their life, their family their issues in drawing and doing paintings.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bromley said a major theme of the exhibition is \u201cstraight-out storytelling\u201d with some stories \u201cquite clear\u201d and others \u201ca bit subtle\u201d.<\/p>\n
In the back room, visitors can find two beautifully crafted digeridoos and a colourfully painted toilet.<\/p>\n
\u201cI wanted to have a special spot for the didges, I wanted them to stand by themselves\u2026 I think they\u2019re really beautiful pieces of art,\u201d Bromley said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t want the toilet to take away from anything else because it\u2019s a really interesting piece of work.\u201d<\/p>\n
This year\u2019s exhibition marks the first for Bromley in her unique role as the City of Greater Bendigo\u2019s First Nations arts officer.<\/p>\n
The works are available for purchase and will be on display from 11am to 4pm.<\/p>\n
