BENDIGO and Marong residents are set to receive a new twelve month supply of organics caddy liners from October.<\/p>\n
Half of the bags delivered to some 40,000 households will be made in China under the City of Greater Bendigo\u2019s new supplier contract.<\/p>\n
The other 20,000 households will receive Australian made caddy liners from the City\u2019s previous contract.<\/p>\n
The deliveries will be carried out by social enterprise Access Australia and will include a waste management reference guide.<\/p>\n
City of Greater Bendigo resource recovery and education manager Brooke Pearce said there are actions residents can take to make sure the new caddy liners last.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause they are designed to breakdown, residents should store their compostable liners in a dark, cool, dry place to ensure they last for a full year,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe caddy liners are made from corn starch and vegetable oil so they will breakdown in around 30 days when commercially composted.”<\/p>\n
Ms Pearce said households with leftover caddy liners could pass them onto friends, family and neighbours or return them to the municipality\u2019s customer service centre at 15 Hopetoun Street, Bendigo.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would also like to remind residents that plastic bags must never be used in the organics bin so to avoid contaminating your organic waste bin residents must only use the caddy liners supplied by the City,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
