AUSTRALIA, we have a new Wimbledon champion. The fourty-one-year drought is over.<\/p>\n
World number one Ash Barty staked her place in history with a stunning three-set 6-3, 6-7 (7\/4), 6-3 victory over eighth-seeded Czech Karol\u00edna Pl\u00edskova.<\/p>\n
Barty, 25, became the first Aussie woman to claim the Wimbledon ladies\u2019 singles title since fellow Indigenous Australian Evonne Goolagong Cawley did in 1980.<\/p>\n
The newly-crowned Barty shed tears after the match, describing her win as a \u201cmiracle\u201d that allows her to join her idol as tennis royalty.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe stars aligned for me over the past fortnight,\u201d said Barty.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat it happened to fall on the 50th anniversary of Evonne\u2019s first title here is absolutely incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cEvonne is a very special person in my life,\u201d said Barty.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think she has been iconic in paving a way for young indigenous youth to believe in their dreams and to chase their dream.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe\u2019s done exactly that for me as well. Her legacy off the court is incredible. I think if I could be half the person that Evonne is, I\u2019d be a very, very happy person.\u201d<\/p>\n
While her victory came at 1am (AEST), plenty of Australian\u2019s were up to cheer Ash home.<\/p>\n
