{"id":77099,"date":"2021-07-22T04:44:54","date_gmt":"2021-07-21T18:44:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=77099"},"modified":"2022-02-27T11:01:01","modified_gmt":"2022-02-27T00:01:01","slug":"rowers-recognised-at-awards-night","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/sport\/rowers-recognised-at-awards-night\/","title":{"rendered":"Rowers recognised at awards night"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A HUMBLE sixteen-year-old topped the list of award winners at Bendigo Rowing Club\u2019s annual dinner and awards presentation last month.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_77111\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-77111\" style=\"width: 231px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-77111\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Deb-Spring-RV-231x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"231\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-77111\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Deb Spring, vice-president of Rowing Victoria, received the Club\u2019s Coxswain Award for her work with junior rowers.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Eliza Oxley received the Hannah Every-Hall Award, given to the club\u2019s most promising female sculler.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was quite surprised really,\u201d she said. \u201cI was not expecting it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Oxley\u2019s 2019-20 season included a gold medal win on the Barwon River at last year\u2019s School Sport Victoria regatta.<\/p>\n<p>Oxley and her rowing partner, Isabelle Shoebridge, crossed the finish line more than 20 seconds ahead of their competitors in the 1000 metre B final of the female school double scull year 10 division 1 race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d like to go to states next year and continue rowing with my school friends, to grow more friendships and grow as a person to go further as well,\u201d Oxley said.<\/p>\n<p>Oxley\u2019s coach, Neve Coleman, said her determination in the sport made her a worthy recipient of the award, named after the World Champion rower and 2012 Australian Olympic athlete.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDefinitely in the last year we\u2019ve seen Eliza and a few of the other girls really rise up to the challenge of being a regional club competing in a city-based sport, particularly versing elite private schools,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat award is quite special in that it\u2019s named after Hannah who overcame all those challenges\u2026 coming from a rural city, a small lake, not from a private school to then go on and dominate in a sport that generally she wouldn\u2019t succeed in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vice-president of Rowing Victoria, Deb Spring, received the Bendigo Rowing Club Coxswain Award for her work with the club\u2019s junior rowers.<\/p>\n<p>Other award winners on the night included Club Champion, Livia Rosaia, and Most Promising Female Sculler, Julia Rosaia.<\/p>\n<p>Grace Kealy was recognised as Most Improved Junior Rower, while Shoebridge and Phoebe Maher received the Club Coaches award.<\/p>\n<p>Denis Nihill and Peter Wearne were named Most Dedicated and Most Improved Adult Rowers, respectively.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A HUMBLE sixteen-year-old topped the list of award winners at Bendigo Rowing Club\u2019s annual dinner and awards presentation last month.
