RESIDENTS are being encouraged to ditch the cars and utilise walking tracks in Kangaroo Flat.<\/p>\n
A new sign at Kangaroo Flat Train Station has been installed, promoting active travel by mapping routes, leisure centres, and sporting grounds nearby.<\/p>\n
Healthy Greater Bendigo executive officer Amy Brown said the sign was funded by the Healthy Heart of Victoria initiative, in partnership with the City of Greater Bendigo.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe new sign will help to promote and activate key routes between the Kangaroo Flat township and the station and reduce the demand for car parking at the station,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cBy increasing pedestrian movements between the station and the township the safety of the area will be increased and residents will not only be encouraged to walk for transport but will also enjoy the health benefits of doing so.\u201d<\/p>\n
Key landmarks on the map include the Gurri Wanyarra Wellbeing Centre, Gateway Park, Dower Park and the Kangaroo Flat Library.<\/p>\n
Ms Brown said the sign, similar to others in place around the city centre, will \u201chelp people to know where they are, how they can get to where they want to go and how long will it take to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cInternational research shows that walkable cities promote not only the community\u2019s health, but the economy as well,\u201d she said,<\/p>\n
