	{"id":78119,"date":"2021-09-11T04:58:18","date_gmt":"2021-09-10T18:58:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=78119"},"modified":"2022-02-27T11:00:25","modified_gmt":"2022-02-27T00:00:25","slug":"power-of-the-pedal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/news\/power-of-the-pedal\/","title":{"rendered":"Power of the pedal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Bike riding booms in lockdown<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>WHEN the State Government announced a COVID-19 lockdown would come back into effect in regional Victoria in a matter of hours on Saturday, 21 August, bike shop owner Brad Steigenberger had his busiest day in eight years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was insanely busy on Saturday, it was out of control,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Steigenberger operates Bicycle Centre Bendigo and said whenever a lockdown is announced, his customers gear up for more riding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe certainly get a bigger influx prior to lockdowns, for sure. Even during COVID, this last 18 months, our influx of people has been quite a bit more than the normal time of year,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s people buying bikes, there\u2019s people getting bikes fixed that haven\u2019t been fixed for 20 years, it\u2019s just that whole range of person that\u2019s getting everything fixed so they can go and do something.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just sold an e-bike to a 70-year-old two weeks ago,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s the full gamut, it\u2019s everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Steigenberger said people were choosing to hop on their bikes in lockdown not just for exercise, but also for their mental health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it was more the physical part of it possibly to start with but then once they\u2019ve gone out there and understood that they can just shut down and take their mind off everything, I think it\u2019s been great for their mental health,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Data collected since 2015 from City of Greater Bendigo counters along several bike trails shows the number of daily bikes annually has peaked over the last two years.<\/p>\n<p>An average daily count of bikes where the O\u2019Keefe Rail Trail passes over Cashens Road was 95.4 last year and 86.3 this year.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to pre-pandemic times in 2019, that number stood at 42.9.<\/p>\n<p>On the Back Creek Trail at Havlin Street East, there was a daily average of 189.2 and 161.9 bikes in 2020 and 2021 respectively, up from 131.9 in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Bike Bendigo treasurer Adrian McMahon said the organisation were hearing from beginners wanting to know more about the city\u2019s trails.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot all of us want to ride on the roads or have the confidence to ride on the roads,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_78139\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-78139\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-78139\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/IMG_0004-300x142.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"142\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-78139\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bike Bendigo\u2019s riding classes were \u201cincredibly successful\u201d last year, according to the group\u2019s treasurer Adrian McMahon. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cA lot of cyclists here either want to know about the local infrastructure where they might be able to ride on separated bike paths, certainly bush tracks, and there has been a big uptick in people also mountain biking in the area too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bike Bendigo also host riding classes, which Mr McMahon said were a hit with participants last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the periods last year when we could run them, they were incredibly successful and we had a lot of good feedback about those,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are plans to run more of those this year and we do have funding from agencies such as VicHealth and VicRoads to run some of those, restrictions pending.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said Bike Bendigo also saw an \u201cuptick\u201d in interest to participate in their monthly community rides, with COVID capped places booking out \u201creally quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was a real mix of people that may have bought their first bike, or they might\u2019ve had a bike that they hadn\u2019t ridden in 20 years and they were getting back out again,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d expect that once we get out of the restrictions then we might see quite a bit of interest where we end up with larger groups and we may have to do multiple rides.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As well as the O\u2019Keefe and Back Creek trails, Mr McMahon recommended riders check out the Bendigo Creek and Long Gully trails.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor people that might not be a mountain biker, there is the Bendigo Bushland Trail and it basically loops all of Bendigo,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s dirt roads, most of them are pretty good quality, and if that\u2019s something where you want to get into the bush a little bit more then\u2026 it\u2019s quite a good location to go for a ride.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr McMahon said Bike Bendigo hoped to see riding remain common practice for those who have picked it up recently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hope that it does stay as a regular routine for people after COVID, that\u2019ll be the interesting thing to see now is that whether these habits do stick once we go back to some sort of normal life.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bike riding booms in lockdown WHEN the State Government announced a COVID-19 lockdown would come back into effect in regional Victoria in a matter of hours on Saturday, 21 August, bike shop owner Brad Steigenberger had his busiest day in eight years. \u201cIt was insanely busy on Saturday, it was out of control,\u201d he said.
