{"id":78205,"date":"2021-09-12T04:55:41","date_gmt":"2021-09-11T18:55:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=78205"},"modified":"2022-02-27T11:34:49","modified_gmt":"2022-02-27T00:34:49","slug":"local-artist-profile-sarah-wallace-smith","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/news\/local-artist-profile-sarah-wallace-smith\/","title":{"rendered":"Local artist profile: Sarah Wallace-Smith"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THIS week we speak to multi-disciplinary artist Sarah Wallace-Smith<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>How and why did you initially get into art? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Art has always been a passion, but it wasn\u2019t until my youngest child was at school that I was able to study visual arts at TAFE and continued to uni.<\/p>\n<p>When I started, I had a go at anything and everything that was on offer, and it continues to be such a joy to learn more about contemporary artists, and art history.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>How would you describe your artistic style? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWatch this space\u201d is how I\u2019d describe it! I find that I apply different mediums and styles as I explore subjects that interest me. I\u2019ve used everything from graphite to gunpowder!<\/p>\n<p>Often my work examines stories from families of Veterans or life on the farm. Currently, I am busy working on a series of spring themed paintings for a September Exhibition by the Artists in Residence @Valentines.<\/p>\n<p>I have set myself the challenge to complete each panel, using a limited palette of two colours (different each time) and inserting a bird or animal that I\u2019ve spied in my garden.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_78207\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-78207\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-78207\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Off-to-sea-300x223.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-78207\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wallace-Smith\u2019s work Off to sea.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Which painters\/artists inspire you? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Well, I was inspired by the dynamic mark marking of the current <em>Brett Whiteley: Drawing is Everything Exhibition<\/em> at the Bendigo Art Gallery.<\/p>\n<p>Other favourites would be Clarice Beckett. I don\u2019t know what it is about her dreamlike paintings, but I am often left thinking about them, days, months, years later.<\/p>\n<p>Joy Hester, another Australian, who danced to her own tune. I love how her paintings accentuate the emotions of the sitter.<\/p>\n<p>My non-Australian pick would be Tala Madani. Oh my God! Her work makes me laugh out loud!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are some highlights\/fond memories you have from your career? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was really honoured to be a finalist in the Ravenswood Australian Women\u2019s Art Prize and to be invited to judge this year&#8217;s RAW Arts Award.<\/p>\n<p>Working with the Bendigo Pride team is awesome, and I\u2019ve had a blast this year.<\/p>\n<p>I am also super proud of my artwork being used for fundraising purposes for Bendigo Legacy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>How has your work been affected by COVID? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, I started my commercial art space, Art on View at the very start of the pandemic, so lockdowns and no tourists or Melbourne visitors has made it a slow burn!<\/p>\n<p>The silver lining to COVID for me has been the chance to arrange for top notch local artworks to be hung in businesses around Bendigo.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_78208\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-78208\" style=\"width: 293px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-78208\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Bathed-293x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"293\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-78208\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bathed in sunlight, soaked in rain.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>What have you been working on lately? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A very nostalgic piece that tries to articulate the feelings children might have as their father goes off to sea. It\u2019s basically a pencil drawing, with a watercolour sky\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Since COVID, I\u2019ve found that drawing offers me a form of mediation in a way.
