{"id":78832,"date":"2021-10-15T04:47:47","date_gmt":"2021-10-14T17:47:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=78832"},"modified":"2022-02-27T11:04:44","modified_gmt":"2022-02-27T00:04:44","slug":"dragstrip-revved-up-for-return","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/sport\/dragstrip-revved-up-for-return\/","title":{"rendered":"Dragstrip revved up for return"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WHILE the hot rods are back burning rubber for regional participants and spectators at the Heathcote Racing Park, track owner Lance Warren said the venue won\u2019t see a profit until people from Melbourne come out of lockdown.<\/p>\n<p>HPR began its six-to-eight-month activity calendar on Saturday with the first DYO Regional Madness round, which Mr Warren said are \u201ctaster\u201d events.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis regional madness we\u2019re doing now is purely for regional, just to get out in the spirit of competition,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs soon as Melbourne can open up we\u2019ll see the big events. We\u2019ve got planned the Ford Nationals at the end of the year, right up to what is the pinnacle in April next year which is Top Fuel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTop Fuel is the pinnacle of the category in drag racing in the world, and there hasn\u2019t been Top Fuel in Victoria or here at HPR for decades. Our goal is to get that and we\u2019ve won the rights to run a round in April.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_78833\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-78833\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-78833\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Heathcote-Drags-18-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-78833\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">HPR owner Lance Warren said events are funding significant works to the track, including extending the concrete barriers and installing safety nets.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But, to host the event, HPR is relying on funding from its current racing calendar, and money that would\u2019ve come from the past six months of events, cancelled due to lockdowns and bad weather.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve really had it up against us, however we\u2019ve been trying to stay positive and we\u2019ve been using the time in lockdown to do more maintenance and works, but we rely on funding from running the events.\u201d Mr Warren said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we\u2019ve got to now work hard for the next three to four months running events to bring the revenue in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Warren said work that needs to be done includes an extension to the concrete barrier, net installation, repairs to the track\u2019s return and a sealing of the entrance road.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_78834\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-78834\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-78834\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Heathcote-Drags-19-300x183.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"183\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-78834\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Holden Manaro GTS revs it engine for the crowd.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He would also like to install shade for spectators and a playground for kids.<\/p>\n<p>HPR, built in 1975, is a privately-owned business purchased by Mr Warren in January. It receives no government funding.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty-thousand people attended an event earlier this year and Mr Warren said when HPR is thriving the whole region benefits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe thousands of people that came filled the taverns, restaurants, and hotels. It\u2019s a flow on effect for the whole region,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>With a positive attitude and a dedicated team, Mr Warren is confident his vision for HPR will be achieved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople that know me know that we just do it, it\u2019s no talk we just do it.
