{"id":79673,"date":"2021-11-29T04:57:01","date_gmt":"2021-11-28T17:57:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=79673"},"modified":"2022-02-27T10:59:46","modified_gmt":"2022-02-26T23:59:46","slug":"community-card-making-breaks-isolation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/news\/community-card-making-breaks-isolation\/","title":{"rendered":"Community card making breaks isolation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MEMBERS of the Long Gully Neighbourhood Centre\u2019s Creative Cards group know the simple act of sending a birthday, greeting or Christmas card can have a profound impact on those most isolated in society.<\/p>\n<p>They meet fortnightly to craft cards for the 47 residents at Estia Health Aged Care, and they\u2019re now busily working ahead of the holiday season.<\/p>\n<p>The group formed last year in the thick of COVID-19 lockdowns when community development worker at LGNC, Kerry Parry, said those in aged care were particularly disconnected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe felt like we were in this little bubble and thought \u2018what about the people in aged care who are almost in a prison because they can\u2019t have visitors?\u2019,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_79675\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79675\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-79675\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/DSC_0296-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-79675\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Personalised, handmade cards are addressed to all 47 residents at Estia Health. Photo: KATIE MARTIN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe came up with the idea of making little encouragement cards to say to the residents that someone\u2019s thinking of you even though you\u2019re isolated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This year will mark the second delivery of Christmas cards to the facility and the group has also supplied blank cards for residents to take free of charge to send to their loved ones on special occasions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach time they\u2019re received we get photos of the residents with their faces all lit up and I think for some of them it\u2019s the only card they get,\u201d Ms Parry said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s quite sad, with social media and everything else we\u2019re moving away from the personalised touch of a card or letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA phone call or visit is great, but it\u2019s gone in the blink of an eye. A card, you\u2019ve got it forever. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe card making group is helping rejuvenate that written word.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Having never set foot in the aged care centre due to COVID-19 restrictions, Ms Parry said the LGNC played an important role in helping to bridge gaps in the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople love caring for other people, but you don\u2019t always have the ability to connect firsthand with them. We can be that conduit of joy for people,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor all of us, we want to be able to connect with our community and with COVID restrictions that can sometimes be really difficult.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur hope is that sooner or later, perhaps next year when COVID settles a little more, we may be able to invite some of the residents to our community garden and have an afternoon tea.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MEMBERS of the Long Gully Neighbourhood Centre\u2019s Creative Cards group know the simple act of sending a birthday, greeting or Christmas card can have a profound impact on those most isolated in society.
