	{"id":79855,"date":"2021-12-04T04:57:50","date_gmt":"2021-12-03T17:57:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=79855"},"modified":"2022-02-27T10:59:45","modified_gmt":"2022-02-26T23:59:45","slug":"bendigo-the-birthplace-of-womens-cricket","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/news\/bendigo-the-birthplace-of-womens-cricket\/","title":{"rendered":"Bendigo the birthplace of women\u2019s cricket"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ON the afternoon of this year\u2019s Women\u2019s Big Bash League final, Louise Zedda-Sampson launched <em>Bowl the Maidens Over<\/em>, her book examining the very first game of women\u2019s cricket ever played in Australia, held right here in Bendigo one-hundred-and-forty-seven years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Zedda-Sampson, a Melbourne-based writer, first uncovered the story of the origins of Australian women\u2019s cricket while doing a research project for a cricket club in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt really got me,\u201d she said. \u201cI thought \u2018this is a real success story for the women\u2019, and the more I looked for information on it, there wasn\u2019t anything around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 1874 game was played at Rosalind Park, known then as Camp Reserve, as a fundraiser for the Bendigo Hospital and then-Bendigo Benevolent Asylum, now the Anne Caudle Centre.<\/p>\n<p>Compelled by the women and their determination to break down societal barriers held firmly in place at the time, Zedda-Sampson began a deep dive into researching the charity match with the help of Bendigo Historical Society\u2019s Dennis Johanson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve told the story through the media reports of the day so that people can get the varied views and the responses to the women\u2019s games and how they played,\u201d Zedda-Sampson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt gives a real on-the-ground sense of what it was like for the women as sports people, and as women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen people pick up the book, they can walk through those first games and they will feel how the ladies felt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said it was the women\u2019s story, not the sport, that inspired the book.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, it was more their story of really putting their all in, giving it a go and trying to do something for their community,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven in the face of criticism, they kept on going.
