GOULBURN-Murray Water is reminding people to stay safe on the region\u2019s waterways this summer.<\/p>\n
Recent rainy weather means the region\u2019s lakes, dams and reservoirs are full and GMW expects an influx of users to taking advantage of the conditions.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re looking for people to make smart choices, so that everyone visiting our storages enjoys their time and returns home safe,\u201d said Scott Wikman, acting general manager of GMW Water Storage Services.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen visiting, be sure to stay safe at all times by following the rules for safe boating, including following speed restrictions and wearing a lifejacket.<\/p>\n
\u201cAny temporary speed restrictions are signposted at public boat ramps. At all other times you should travel at a safe speed for the water level and conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n
Last year saw the worst fatal drowning toll in more than 20 years according to a Life Saving Victoria report.<\/p>\n
Annual drowning report said people who live in regional Victoria are almost twice as likely to drown than those in metropolitan areas and there was a 58 per cent increase in the number of drownings in inland waterways compared to the 10-year average.<\/p>\n
GMW\u2019s Water Smarts campaign outlines ways people can stay safe while having fun boating and swimming this summer.<\/p>\n
They include sticking to a safe speed, wearing a lifejacket, staying with a friend, checking the conditions, not drinking alcohol, be aware of hazard and not jumping near dam walls or ledges.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
