{"id":80423,"date":"2022-01-13T04:47:42","date_gmt":"2022-01-12T17:47:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=80423"},"modified":"2022-02-27T11:04:00","modified_gmt":"2022-02-27T00:04:00","slug":"tennis-tourney-a-smashing-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/sport\/tennis-tourney-a-smashing-success\/","title":{"rendered":"Tennis tourney a smashing success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BENDIGO tennis fans were treated to a week-long competition which concluded last Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The 2022 Bendigo International featured two tournaments, the ATP Challenger Tour and the ITF Women\u2019s World Tennis Tour, kicking off the tennis season with up-and-coming and veteran players flying in from around the world to compete.<\/p>\n<p>American Ernesto Escobedo took home the men\u2019s championship, defeating Frenchmen Enzo Couacaud in three-sets, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5.<\/p>\n<p>Belgium\u2019s Ysaline Bonaventure claimed the women\u2019s title, with the 27-year-old showcasing her experience defeating 16-year-old Venezuelan Victoria Jimenez Kasinteseva 6-3, 6-1.<\/p>\n<p>All four single\u2019s finalists entered the qualifying rounds of the Australian Open which started this week.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_80430\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-80430\" style=\"width: 227px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-80430\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/PDW_2552-227x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"227\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2022\/01\/PDW_2552-227x300.jpg 227w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2022\/01\/PDW_2552-773x1024.jpg 773w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2022\/01\/PDW_2552-768x1017.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2022\/01\/PDW_2552-1160x1536.jpg 1160w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2022\/01\/PDW_2552-1546x2048.jpg 1546w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2022\/01\/PDW_2552-scaled.jpg 1933w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 227px) 100vw, 227px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-80430\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The hard-hitting Escobedo won the ATP Challenger Tour final.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With just one day of the week interrupted by rain, manager of the Bendigo Tennis Association, James Rouel, said he was delighted with how the competition went, estimating 3000-4000 spectators over the week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the weekend we\u2019ve set record crowds so it\u2019s a fantastic testament to the residents of Bendigo to keep coming out and supporting major events like this.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a fantastic atmosphere and as long as the crowds keep coming, they\u2019ll keep putting events like this in Bendigo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Bendigo Tennis Centre has previously seen the likes of Australian champion Ash Barty and rising French star Ugo Humbert take to its courts.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_80426\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-80426\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-80426\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/PDW_2703-300x242.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"242\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-80426\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Frenchman Enzo Couacaud fell just short of the win.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re getting the stars of tomorrow here, a couple of years later they\u2019re all on the main stage, it\u2019s a great place to come and watch some quality tennis,\u201d Mr Rouel said.<\/p>\n<p>With the quality of play high, Mr Rouel said the events are a treat for all tennis fans, young and old.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTennis is a sport you can play at any age,\u201d he said. \u201cIt definitely helps draw attention to the sport in Bendigo, it helps with memberships and revenue for not just ours, but smaller clubs in the region, numbers rise after events like this.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BENDIGO tennis fans were treated to a week-long competition which concluded last Sunday.
