LOCAL businesses are being encouraged to apply for temporary tenancies, available in both late January and late February, within the ingeniously \u201crefitted and repurposed\u201d former toilets in the much-maligned Hargreaves Mall.<\/p>\n
The so-called \u201clanterns\u201d – angular, abrupt structures not unlike what you might come across at Melbourne\u2019s Federation Square – now sport a \u201cservery window\u201d, and prospective tenants will also be allowed to use the vacant spaces adjacent to them.<\/p>\n
City of Greater Bendigo director of strategy and growth, Steve Hamilton, said the short-term, flexible tenancies will be provided at no cost to successful applicants, with the municipality promising to provide \u201csignificant logistical support.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe pop up spaces are suitable for all kinds of businesses from micro-retailers, creatives, start-ups, home-based or online ventures to fitness and wellbeing professionals who are interested in using these centrally located spaces,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe activities at the lanterns will complement the existing businesses in Hargreaves Mall and these new tenants will have the opportunity to raise their profile and promote their brand, products or services or host pop up events in the heart of the city.<\/p>\n
\u201cHargreaves Mall is changing, and the lanterns initiative is part of many exciting opportunities taking place including the installation of a big screen next February, construction of the new ACCOR Mantra Hotel, followed by a new shade shelter and landscaping to create a welcoming space.\u201d<\/p>\n
The former toilets have already been successfully occupied by local lolly maker Libby\u2019s Lollygogs and IT business Mae and Jose.<\/p>\n
