{"id":80533,"date":"2022-01-20T04:57:22","date_gmt":"2022-01-19T17:57:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=80533"},"modified":"2022-02-27T11:03:58","modified_gmt":"2022-02-27T00:03:58","slug":"cats-finally-prowl-the-boards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/news\/cats-finally-prowl-the-boards\/","title":{"rendered":"Cats finally prowl the boards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AFTER being originally slated for September last year, Tribe Youth Theatre\u2019s production of <em>Cats<\/em> finally hit the stage last Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Cast members were eager to perform the show, which was announced way back in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Taylah Chisholm, who plays Grizabella, said the musical has been a long time coming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe original cast was announced in 2020, but after being postponed a couple times it\u2019s great to be in costume, under the lights, on stage and performing for an audience,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a long process and the rehearsals have been very choppy. With COVID we\u2019ve been very stop-start, we could only have a certain amount of people in a rehearsal space at once, but it\u2019s been good.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_80535\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-80535\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-80535\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Cats-Dress-Rehearsal-3-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-80535\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Erin Tinker as Rumpleteazer (centre).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Having been cast in early 2020, Chisholm said it\u2019s definitely the longest time she\u2019s spent in a role.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been good to be able to research the character a little bit more and focus on her material so it\u2019s not always bad,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Chisholm described Grizabella as an older, fragile cat, ostracized from the group of jellicles but eager to regain her respect and be selected to go to the Heaviside Layer, a heavenly place where cats are reborn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe gets the big song <em>Memory<\/em> at the end of act two, which is amazing for me to sing,\u201d she said. \u201cThe audience begins not liking her and as the story progresses, I feel they start to love her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be able to do a show written by Andrew Lloyd-Weber is a privilege. Not many people get this opportunity to perform this in-depth and well-known show, so you\u2019ve just got to take it as it comes and enjoy every moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>First performing with Bendigo Theatre Company in 2017, Chisholm most recently played the lead in BTC\u2019s <em>We Will Rock You.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Cats <\/em>will be the 19-year-old\u2019s last show on Bendigo stages for a while, after being accepted into the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts at Edith Cowan University.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_80536\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-80536\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-80536\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Cats-Dress-Rehearsal-20-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-80536\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Katie McGregor as Pouncival and Gemma Chisholm as Etcetera pounce.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been accepted into the diploma of musical theatre,\u201d she said. \u201cWAAPA is such a highly rated musical theatre school in Australia, I\u2019m still very overwhelmed with my acceptance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a year worth of full-on material, full-on works and then we\u2019ll assess at the end of the year what I decide to do after that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, Chisholm said her time on the local performing arts scene has been the perfect platform to start her musical theatre career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBendigo Theatre Company has taught me all of my skills pretty much,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGaining confidence, how to interact with one another and just how to really read into the material you\u2019re learning, I\u2019ll take that with me definitely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Cats<\/em> is on at the Girton Black Box with one show tomorrow night and two on Saturday.
