BENDIGO has welcomed sixty-seven new citizens following an Australia Day ceremony last week.<\/p>\n
It was a time of excitement for those who now have Australia to call home forever.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis was extremely special. I learnt the Australian national anthem and the pledge, and I woke up singing it this morning,\u201d freshly minted citizen Judy Beens said.<\/p>\n
Fellow new Australian Sophia Hall said it was worth the long wait to receive her citizenship.<\/p>\n
Originally from the Philippines, Ms Hall said she was overcome with excitement when the day arrived.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was very excited, and it felt like the day had finally come because it\u2019s been a long wait,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s a very special occasion so we\u2019re going to celebrate after.<\/p>\n
\u201cI had some of my friends who got theirs last year and they had to get it via Zoom, but I was lucky to have it face-to-face.\u201d<\/p>\n
All those who received their citizenship were happy to take the pledge in person rather than online.<\/p>\n
The event, which is usually held in Bendigo\u2019s Town Hall, was moved to the Ulumbarra Theatre for the first time.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was special, especially because we had to wait because of the delays from COVID. It made it even more special, it made it feel like we\u2019ve really achieved something,\u201d Ms Beens said.<\/p>\n
Originally from South Africa, couple Judy and Tjeerd Beens have lived in Australia since 2015.<\/p>\n
There were no nerves on the day for the couple, who have had other family members go through the experience.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019d been through it with our sons. They became citizens before us,\u201d Mr Beens said.<\/p>\n
After the long wait, the nation\u2019s newest citizens said they are proud and happy to have received their citizenship.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a beautiful culture. The Australian culture is beautiful and they\u2019re fantastic people,\u201d Mr Beens said.<\/p>\n
