BENDIGO Foodshare is aiming to manage its growth and sustainability with the announcement of its new CEO, Michelle Murphy.<\/p>\n
Ms Murphy was appointed to the role last week and comes from a long history of not-for-profit programs, including in community, family and women\u2019s health services.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m very excited to have joined Bendigo Foodshare at this pivotal stage,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Foodshare has experienced growth within its own operations as food security has become more important during the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n
According to the Foodbank Hunger Report 2021, one in six Australian adults didn\u2019t have enough to eat last year, and one in three of those were new to the situation.<\/p>\n
Foodshare responded by rescuing and distributing 828,000 kilograms worth of food over the last 12 months, 20 per cent more than the previous year, supported by 200 active volunteers.<\/p>\n
Construction of its new home is currently underway, with a purpose-built warehouse coming to Golden Square.<\/p>\n
\u201cPlans for the new warehouse are well and truly progressing, thanks to the Mission Possible fundraising campaign and the amazing generosity of our local community,\u201d Ms Murphy said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are also so many great initiatives Bendigo Foodshare is part of, including Cafes for Covid, YouFoods and the Community Food Pantry, all signs that community spirit is alive and well in Central Victoria.\u201d<\/p>\n
She said Bendigo Foodshare has been \u201cpunching above its weight\u201d for a long time.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m looking forward to supporting the staff and hundreds of volunteers who have been working tirelessly, particularly over these past two years, working alongside Bridget Bentley who will continue the great work she has been doing heading up our operations and community initiatives,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Board chair at Bendigo Foodshare Cathie Steele was delighted with Ms Murphy\u2019s appointment after an extensive selection process.<\/p>\n
