{"id":81086,"date":"2022-02-17T04:45:28","date_gmt":"2022-02-16T17:45:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=81086"},"modified":"2022-02-27T11:03:52","modified_gmt":"2022-02-27T00:03:52","slug":"frenzys-fervour-gets-bigger-and-better","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/sport\/frenzys-fervour-gets-bigger-and-better\/","title":{"rendered":"Frenzy\u2019s fervour gets bigger and better"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SPECTATORS were treated to a special showcase of athletics last Friday at the Bendigo Harriers\u2019 5K Frenzy.<\/p>\n<p>In its second year, coordinator Brett Gilligan deemed the night a \u201cmassive success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had over 90 people run, which is almost double than last year, and the times were a heck of a lot quicker,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The event included a 1000-metre under 14s race, a mixed 5000-metre race, and elite men\u2019s and women\u2019s 5000-metre races.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Gilligan said what makes the Frenzy so special is the crowd gets to watch on from lane four of the track.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no other competition in Australia where the crowd gets on to the track,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJudging from what the athletes say, it\u2019s an absolutely fantastic thing for the crowd to get that close, and judging from the crowd, they really enjoy it as well. It\u2019s a real win-win.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAthletics can be a rather boring thing. Playing footy and having a crowd meters away is really inspiring and gets you up, so if we can bring some of that to athletics, I think it can only be of benefit.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_81088\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-81088\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-81088\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Bendigo_Athletics-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-81088\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The mixed under-14s started the event with their 1000-metre race.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Thirteen-year-old Ebony Woodward claimed victory in the juniors\u2019 race with a time of 3.40.69 and Williamstown runner Brett Ellis won the mixed event with a time of 15.06.65.<\/p>\n<p>After a couple weeks off running due to injury, 30-year-old Andrew Buchanan was back on top with a win in the men\u2019s race, beating his own track record with a time of 14.10.12.<\/p>\n<p>Former Commonwealth Games marathon runner Sarah Klein won the women\u2019s race with a time of 16.35.35. She will now turn her focus to making either the Commonwealth Games or World Championship\u2019s national marathon team.<\/p>\n<p>While the event was a success on a local level, scheduling conflicts meant the field was compromised, with some athletes opting to run in elite competitions in Adelaide or Sydney.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_81091\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-81091\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-81091\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Bendigo_Athletics-6-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2022\/02\/Bendigo_Athletics-6-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2022\/02\/Bendigo_Athletics-6-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2022\/02\/Bendigo_Athletics-6-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2022\/02\/Bendigo_Athletics-6-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2022\/02\/Bendigo_Athletics-6-1365x2048.jpg 1365w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2022\/02\/Bendigo_Athletics-6-scaled.jpg 1707w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-81091\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eaglehawk runner Kevin Shanahan competed in the mixed 5000-metre run.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mr Gilligan said he hopes the Frenzy will evolve into a bigger marquee event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019ll go around again, it\u2019s just a matter of working with Athletics Victoria and Athletics Australia to try and find exactly where the Frenzy\u2019s going to fit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe could just keep running it as a local meet and it\u2019ll be successful but I think the future of the Frenzy is quite large.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll be in conversations to possibly make it the state championships next year and get an even bigger Victorian crowd up and that way it\u2019ll get its on space on the calendar.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SPECTATORS were treated to a special showcase of athletics last Friday at the Bendigo Harriers\u2019 5K Frenzy.
