We had a smaller version last year, so it looks as though that was a good trial run.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While last year\u2019s festival was slightly compressed, visitor numbers were strong with people flocking to see the likes of Louise Milligan and Fiona O\u2019Laughlin.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Sorensen revealed this year\u2019s guest list includes health commentator and journalist Norman Swan, who will speak in person.<\/p>\n<p>Author of <em>Soil<\/em>, farmer Matthew Evans will be appearing, as well as <em>Sunday Times<\/em> bestselling author of <em>Sorrow and Bliss, <\/em>Meg Mason.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_81229\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-81229\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-81229\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/20130315000662582479-original-300x211.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"211\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-81229\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Soil author Matthew Evans will speak in person at the event. Photo: SBS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cMatthew Evans is all about not just paddock to plate, but soil to plate,\u201d Ms Sorensen said. \u201cIt\u2019s brilliant stuff and he is such a terrific man, a lovely speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeg Mason is internationally adored, she\u2019s a hugely admired novelist. Her novel tackles the really interesting topic of mental illness with such humour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The festival will also international guests appearing via video link, including Elizabeth Gilbert, author of novel <em>Eat, Pray, Love<\/em>, <em>Big Magic <\/em>and <em>City of Girls.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cElizabeth Gilbert is obviously a real coup, she hasn\u2019t spoken in Australia like this before,\u201d Ms Sorensen said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s been generous to give us her time, she\u2019s highly sought right across the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hong Kong activist, politician and author of <em>Freedom:<\/em> <em>How We Lose It and How We Fight Back<\/em>, Nathan Law will tell his story, and award-winning author of <em>Why We Kneel, How We Rise<\/em>, former West Indies cricketer Michael Holding rounds out the international guests.<\/p>\n<p>According to Ms Sorensen, the festival has something for everyone, and it\u2019s not limited to avid readers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that sharing the ideas that come out of books is the bonus of all this,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not just about books, it\u2019s the fact that the best kind of thinking goes into books and then it\u2019s available to all of us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re just the start of the conversation and it\u2019s the best start you can get.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For more information on the festival, head to <strong>bendigowritersfestival.com.au<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE region\u2019s biggest celebration of authors, books, and the conversations they create will return from Thursday, 12 May.
