{"id":81231,"date":"2022-02-26T04:50:23","date_gmt":"2022-02-25T17:50:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=81231"},"modified":"2022-02-27T11:21:24","modified_gmt":"2022-02-27T00:21:24","slug":"suburb-by-suburb-snapshot-long-gully-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/real-estate\/suburb-by-suburb-snapshot-long-gully-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Suburb by suburb snapshot &#8211; Long Gully"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Long Gully is approximately 3.4 square kilometres in size with the population in 2011 of 3,339.<\/p>\n<p>By the 2016 Census the population had risen slightly to 3369, showing growth of 0.9 per cent in the area during that time.<\/p>\n<p>Long Gully is three kilometres north-west of Bendigo\u2019s city&#8217;s centre with the Long Gully Creek signifying the physical location of the suburb, and the Long Gully gold reefs ran southwards from Eaglehawk.<\/p>\n<p>In its heyday Long Gully was particularly rich, realising yields as high as five ounces of gold to the ton.<\/p>\n<p>Important historic reef mines were Hustlers (1853), Koch&#8217;s Pioneer and Hercules, the last-mentioned achieving peak production in 1933<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_81233\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-81233\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-81233\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/18-Henkel-Street-Long-Gully-300x182.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2022\/02\/18-Henkel-Street-Long-Gully-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2022\/02\/18-Henkel-Street-Long-Gully.jpg 764w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-81233\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This three-bedroom resto styled Long Gully home built in 1976 sold recently for $515,000.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Originally, Long Gully included the area of Ironbark which is now a separate suburb.<\/p>\n<p>There were commercial and civic centres in Eaglehawk Road, now part of the Loddon Valley Highway, near Havilah Street and Creeth Street.<\/p>\n<p>In 1878 A government school superseded an Anglican facility that had opened in 1856.<\/p>\n<p>The mines were supported by foundries and engineering works, and the locally employed population supported local shops and hotels.<\/p>\n<p>The southern part of Long Gully is distinguished by the Ironbark Creek gully, and west of the Loddon Valley Highway is the Ironbark or Victoria Hill conservation area.<\/p>\n<p>It was an intensively mined area (1856-1949), with one shaft descending to 1402 metres.<\/p>\n<p>The Nell Gwynne poppet head (1932) is a notable landmark and Long Gully was on the Eaglehawk tramline which closed in 1973.<\/p>\n<p>The Long Gully primary school (1878) is on the Victorian Heritage Register and was closed in 1992.<\/p>\n<p>Loddon Valley Highway through Long Gully is dotted with colonial-period houses, shops and existing and former hotels.<\/p>\n<p>CoreLogic data indicates that the predominant age group in Long Gully is 20-29 years with households being primarily childless couples and are likely to be repaying $1000 &#8211; $1399 per month on mortgage repayments<\/p>\n<p>In general, people in Long Gully work in a labourer occupation.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, 56.7 per cent of the homes in Long Gully were owner-occupied compared with 53.3 per cent in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>TITBIT:<\/p>\n<p>In its heyday Long Gully was particularly rich in gold reserves, realising yields as high as five ounces of gold to the ton.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Population: 3,383<\/p>\n<p>Male: 48.7%<\/p>\n<p>Female: 51.3%<\/p>\n<p>Median age: 36<\/p>\n<p>5-year population change: 0.9%<\/p>\n<p>House median value: $475,000<\/p>\n<p>Change in Median Price: (5yrs) is 56%<\/p>\n<p>Median asking rent per week: $375<\/p>\n<p>Average length of ownership: 12 years<\/p>\n<p>Owner occupiers:66%<\/p>\n<p>Renters: 44%<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>House median sale price:<\/p>\n<p>November 2021: $374,600<\/p>\n<p>November 2020: $306,000<\/p>\n<p>November 2019: $273,250<\/p>\n<p>November 2018: $267,000<\/p>\n<p>November 2017: $255,000<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>House sales per annum:<\/p>\n<p>Period ending November 2021: 111<\/p>\n<p>Period ending November 2020: 53<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Land median sale price:<\/p>\n<p>November 2021: N\/A<\/p>\n<p>November 2020: N\/A<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Land sales per annum:<\/p>\n<p>Period ending November 2021: 4<\/p>\n<p>Period ending November 2020: 5<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Long Gully is approximately 3.4 square kilometres in size with the population in 2011 of 3,339.
