{"id":81347,"date":"2022-03-04T04:57:10","date_gmt":"2022-03-03T17:57:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=81347"},"modified":"2022-03-01T16:04:48","modified_gmt":"2022-03-01T05:04:48","slug":"sun-loong-to-return-for-easter-fair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/news\/sun-loong-to-return-for-easter-fair\/","title":{"rendered":"Sun Loong to return for Easter Fair"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AN iconic Bendigo dragon will come out of retirement for a special appearance at this year\u2019s Easter Fair.<\/p>\n<p>Marking the event\u2019s 150th run, Sun Loong will return for an Easter Saturday parade from its home at the Golden Dragon Museum to the Tom Flood Sports Centre.<\/p>\n<p>Bendigo Chinese Association president Doug Lougoon said the announcement was exciting news for the region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter three years of not seeing a dragon in the streets of Bendigo, this will be fantastic,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Sun Loong] was retired to only come out on special occasions and I think you can\u2019t have any more special occasion than the 150th Bendigo Easter Fair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no greater place for Sun Loong to make an encore performance. Photo: KATIE MARTIN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Formerly the longest parade dragon in the world, Sun Loong was retired in 2019 and succeeded by the even longer Dai Gum Loong, who will parade on Easter Monday.<\/p>\n<p>A fundraiser for the Bendigo Health foundation was also launched at the announcement of Sun Loong\u2019s return last week, which Mr Lougoon said upheld a tradition started by the Chinese community during the gold rush to support the local hospital.<\/p>\n<p>This year is the first time the fair will run as a traditional four-day event since 2011, which Bendigo Easter Fair Society president Simon Mulqueen said was another nod to the 150th milestone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve probably been preparing for five years, but since the cancellation in 2020 we\u2019ve been waiting for this moment and all of a sudden it\u2019s only a few weeks away and we\u2019re looking forward to it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been full steam ahead in the last few months since we got the go ahead from government and it\u2019ll be bigger and better than ever.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AN iconic Bendigo dragon will come out of retirement for a special appearance at this year\u2019s Easter Fair.
