AS the sun shone down on runners crossing the finish line at Rosalind Park on Sunday, it was clear the Bendigo Fun Run was back and here to stay.<\/p>\n
Until three years ago the event was held by Bendigo Health, until extra preparation needed for terrorism prevention made it too difficult to organise.<\/p>\n
But it was the determination of two community-minded men, Geoff O\u2019Sullivan and O\u2019Keefe Challenge organiser Nigel Preston, that revived the event.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s been a great day with about 1000 runners across five events, which is really good it means we\u2019ve raised a lot of money for Bendigo Health,\u201d Mr O\u2019Sullivan said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat Nigel Preston and I wanted to do was bring back the community spirit, the fun, and raise money for the children\u2019s ward at the Bendigo Hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr O\u2019Sullivan said he had worked with the City of Greater Bendigo, local police, and businesses including major sponsor Bendigo Ford, to help fund the event, plan a track and close off several roads.<\/p>\n
Chief corporate affairs officer at Bendigo Health, Sarah McAdie, couldn\u2019t help but smile at the efforts from participants and volunteers.<\/p>\n
\u201cI never cease to be amazed by the support we get from the community,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe staff in the children\u2019s ward always know how to put a smile on the kids\u2019 faces and have a bit of fun, to see other people having fun to help them do that is just wonderful.\u201d<\/p>\n
Proceeds from the event will help the hospital fund a bladder scanner and vein finder for paediatric patients.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
