TWO National Basketball League games played in Bendigo could bring a boost to the City\u2019s economy, according to two State Government politicians.<\/p>\n
Members for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan and Bendigo West Maree Edwards recently announced the New Zealand Breakers will play two home games at Bendigo Stadium, supported by the State Government\u2019s significant events program and the City of Greater Bendigo.<\/p>\n
Local basketball fans will be treated to some of the country\u2019s top talent when the Breakers take on the South East Melbourne Phoenix on Sunday, 10 April and the Sydney Kings on Tuesday, 12 April.<\/p>\n
The opportunity comes as the Breakers have been forced to play all their home games in Australia this season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s never been a more important time to attract significant sporting events to regional Victoria,\u201d Ms Allan said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen players, support teams and fans come to town, the benefits are felt right across local communities.\u201d<\/p>\n
As the games take place during school holidays the 4000-seat capacity stadium is expected to be sold out in what could be its biggest couple of nights of the year.<\/p>\n
The two games will be broadcast live in Australia and New Zealand, with the Phoenix game also broadcast in China due to star player Zhou Qi\u2019s home fan base.<\/p>\n
Ms Edwards said the State Government has put in $5 million into the Bendigo Stadium to ensure it meets elite competition standards.<\/p>\n
