{"id":82229,"date":"2022-04-26T04:57:01","date_gmt":"2022-04-25T17:57:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=82229"},"modified":"2022-04-20T10:04:27","modified_gmt":"2022-04-19T23:04:27","slug":"gospel-concert-coming-to-old-jail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/news\/gospel-concert-coming-to-old-jail\/","title":{"rendered":"Gospel concert coming to old jail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE sounds of Quincy Jones and The Caravans will sweep through Ulumbarra Theatre when <em>Freedom Road<\/em> hits the stage next month.<\/p>\n<p>After almost a year of COVID-19 complications, The Bo\u00eete\u2019s production, directed by former Bendigo local and singing instructor Stella Savy, tells the history of slavery and gospel music originating from Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Savy said the show is a remake of the original project curated in 2011 by herself and Ballarat-based singer of the Sweet Monas Choir, Dani Fry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was thought that wouldn\u2019t it be great to do the show 10 years later in a regional centre,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe decided Bendigo would be great, and there\u2019s the irony of performing in the Ulumbarra, the old jail, singing Freedom Road.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The show is made up of a choir of about 130 singers, most of whom are from Bendigo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been running singing workshops for a few years in Bendigo and there\u2019s gorgeous voices and choir in Bendigo,\u201d Savy said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got singers from Ballarat, Melbourne, Gippsland, Mallacoota; all over the state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Supporting artists include Geoffrey Williams and Sweet Monas Choir members Deb Clarke and Barry Kay with Carl Pannuzzo, Barry Deenick, and Tim Neal is also part of the band.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt gives me the tingles they sound so good,\u201d Savy said. \u201cI can\u2019t wait to hear the big band with the choir and everything, it\u2019s going to be awesome.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe story through the songs is phenomenal and there\u2019ll be lots of things in there that people may know or they may not know, facts about slavery and the history of modern music.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of what we listen to now, R&#8217;n&#8217;B, soul, rap, it all stems from Africa and the slave trade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you like that modern music, it\u2019s a great way to be exposed to where we\u2019ve come from musically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Freedom Road<\/em> plays at the Ulumbarra Theatre on Sunday, 8 May at 2.30pm.
