{"id":82402,"date":"2022-04-28T04:59:27","date_gmt":"2022-04-27T17:59:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=82402"},"modified":"2022-04-28T10:09:43","modified_gmt":"2022-04-27T23:09:43","slug":"thousands-gather-for-dawn-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/news\/thousands-gather-for-dawn-service\/","title":{"rendered":"Thousands gather for dawn service"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CROWDS flocked to the Soldiers Memorial Institute on Monday morning for the first unrestricted Anzac Day service since 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Bendigo District RSL president Peter Swandale said the number of people who turned up for the dawn service was amazing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe knew it was going to be quite a large crowd, particularly post-pandemic so we planned for that,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m very pleased, it\u2019s important to come out and remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Free from COVID-19 restrictions, people barricading the parade and memorial had no wire fences or QR code check-ins to deal with for the 107th anniversary of Australian soldiers landing on the shores of Gallipoli.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_82405\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82405\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-82405 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2022\/04\/BDT-Anzac-Day-12-300x181.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"181\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-82405\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Attendance numbers were strong across the region.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mr Swandale said about 70 veterans marched down Pall Mall for the dawn service, and a recent State Government relaxing of restrictions meant unvaccinated veterans could take part in the ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAllowing to come together now is important,\u201d he said. \u201cReconnection with the ones who are not vaccinated and they\u2019re here this morning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important for us to now connect with them face-to-face.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Each year, the RSL president with over 35 years of service tells a story of a local serviceperson, and this year his address honoured the 80th anniversary of the fall of Singapore in 1942.<\/p>\n<p>He told the story of a Long Gully-born prisoner of war held by Japan during World War Two, George Llewellyn Thomas, who served in hospitals.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_82406\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82406\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-82406\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2022\/04\/BDT-Anzac-Day-08-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2022\/04\/BDT-Anzac-Day-08-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2022\/04\/BDT-Anzac-Day-08-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2022\/04\/BDT-Anzac-Day-08-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2022\/04\/BDT-Anzac-Day-08-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2022\/04\/BDT-Anzac-Day-08-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2022\/04\/BDT-Anzac-Day-08-272x182.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-82406\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Robert Hillier, who served in Vietnam, at the Bendigo Dawn Service.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cGeorge maintained a diary throughout the war,\u201d Mr Swandale said. \u201cHe was in the thick of it looking after all the sick soldiers in the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would have been horrendous to see so many, he talked about 1700 servicemen either sick or dying. That would\u2019ve been a very sad state to see.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI read the whole diary and amazing statistics he talked about. He was there, he was at the front of it trying to make sure they survived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With conflict continuing to escalate in Ukraine and around the world today, Mr Swandale said it\u2019s important everyone takes a moment to remember and reflect on \u201cthe young men and women standing up for their beliefs and their culture.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CROWDS flocked to the Soldiers Memorial Institute on Monday morning for the first unrestricted Anzac Day service since 2019.
