{"id":82426,"date":"2022-04-28T04:38:31","date_gmt":"2022-04-27T17:38:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=82426"},"modified":"2022-04-27T12:26:41","modified_gmt":"2022-04-27T01:26:41","slug":"pundit-wants-umpire-issues-fixed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/sport\/pundit-wants-umpire-issues-fixed\/","title":{"rendered":"Pundit wants umpire issues fixed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CAROLINE Wilson has lamented the current umpiring crisis in the AFL after yet another controversial weekend of football.<\/p>\n<p>The crackdown on umpire abuse was in the spotlight during round five, with several 50-metre penalties paid for players raising their arms protesting decisions.<\/p>\n<p>With AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan announcing last week he was stepping down at the end of 2022, Wilson urged him to attempt to sort out the current problems with umpire respect before his tenure ends.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Gillon McLachlan\u2019s number one priority] has got to fix the umpiring problem,\u201d Wilson said on <em>Don\u2019t Shoot The Messenger<\/em> podcast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t fix it in the next six months clearly, but he\u2019s set on this path. He apologised to the umpires on behalf of the AFL and the game at the start of the season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone is carrying on about players lifting up their arms and protesting decisions and having 50-metre penalties paid against them. Be consistent and pay the penalties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is an umpiring crisis, umpires can probably stop being too matey with players and perhaps be a bit more formal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just think it\u2019s one area the NRL seems to be better than the AFL, we desperately need more umpires.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow with 18 women\u2019s teams, there aren\u2019t enough umpires, and we need to provide better pathways for women umpires.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone has to stop carrying on about poor umpiring, players make mistakes all the time and we don\u2019t carry on about their mistakes like we do about umpires.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just think this is such a big problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&#8211; BY LAURENCE ROSEN\/ SEN<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CAROLINE Wilson has lamented the current umpiring crisis in the AFL after yet another controversial weekend of football.
